[MS] Officer Hobson turns himself in on domestic violence/ assault warrant

MPD officer arrested
Meridian Star, MS
By Brian Livingston blivingston@themeridianstar.com
December 26, 2008
Meridian Police Department officials confirmed this week that one of its officers had been arrested. MPD Chief Benny DuBose said Daren Dennis Hobson, 37, of 3436 Poplar Springs Drive, turned himself in to deputies of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday after he was contacted by MPD supervisors that the county had a warrant out for his arrest on domestic violence/simple assault charges. "The supervisors told him of the warrant and he decided it would be best to just turn himself in," said DuBose. It was unclear who filed the initial complaint against Hobson that led to the warrant being issued. DuBose said Hobson, who was a recently promoted senior police officer with the MPD, would have his status with the department reviewed. Hobson has been with the department for a little more than a year and was one of the DUI officers on the force. He posted a $1,000 bond and is currently out of jail.

  1. There is quite a discussion about this event, the local authorities involved, and others experiences in this forum.

  2. As a previous victim of this man, I know his violent abuse of women and children were known and covered up before he was ever hired as a police officer. He also suffers from severe bipolar disorder. How does a man like this get to become an officer of the law and carry a gun?

  4. Anonymous asked, "How does a man like this get to become an officer of the law and carry a gun?"

That is the question. It's not just him though. A large percentage of the officers are allowed to continue on.

  5. I would advise that copies be made of that thread on the Meridian Star Forum. I'm pretty sure it will be deleted first thing Monday morning.

  6. I got the first 5 pages and the 14th page. Most of the rest is yada yada. Thanks.

If anyone is still in danger there and doesn't want to be, consider leaving Mississipi. No one can tell someone else what they have to do, but sometimes we need to be reminded that we have options.

We don't want to lose our home and closeness to families - give up our community of folks, but I always wonder when I am posting the murders here on the blog if the victim would have gone to greater lengths to leave if they had known / believed that death would be the result.

We talk ourselves down from the danger. And sometimes we decide to just ride it out and take our chances... but it's just good to remember that there are options to consider that can at least lessen the danger by degrees.

  7. As a previous victim of this man, I wanted to post my concerns. I have been keeping up with the forum on both the Meridian Star and WTOK blogs. I was abused by this man over 5 years ago as was my child(who was only 3 yrs old at the time!). We tried to have justice served at that time- to no avail. I truly hope this new victim will be able to see Justice and keep the man from continuing his history of violence, abuse, and lies.

  8. Also a victim of this man. I know there is some out there that dont want to beleive the stories about this man because he is a very likable person when u meet him and he says all the right things he is so sweet and sincere whats not to love and he is good looking to. you may want to dig a little deeper the old sayings "Beauty is only Skin Deep" or "Dont Judge a Book By Its Cover" might just right on the money here.

A Meridian Police Department patrolman is set to return to the force after charges of domestic violence filed in December were dropped.

MPD Chief Benny DuBose said Wednesday senior patrolman Daren Dennis Hobson will now have to go through a review process with department officials to determine if he in fact will rejoin the force.

"The end of his thirty-day suspension is Friday so at that time his case will be reviewed," said DuBose. "I don't see anything at this time that will keep him from resuming his duties."

DuBose said Hobson could begin work again as a patrolman Monday.

Hobson, 37, turned himself in on Dec. 23 to sheriff's deputies after he was notified by MPD supervisors a warrant for his arrest on the domestic charges and simple assault had been filed. During his court appearance Tuesday, the case was dismissed because the complainant had withdrawn the charges.

  11. Officer’s status unresolved
    The Meridian Star
    By Brian Livingston
    January 8, 2009

The status of Meridian Police Department patrolman Daren Dennis Hobson, who was charged last December for domestic violence/ simple assault, is still unknown at this time.

MPD Chief Benny DuBose said Hobson, a senior officer who had been on the force for a little more than a year before he turned himself in to deputies of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department, was on paid leave pending the outcome of the case in court. If convicted, Hobson, 37, would lose his job.

"You can't carry a weapon if convicted of a domestic crime," said DuBose Thursday afternoon.

Hobson is scheduled to enter a plea Jan. 19 in the case during his arraignment in Lauderdale County Justice Court.

On Dec. 23, Hobson turned himself in to sheriff's deputies after he was notified by MPD supervisors a warrant for his arrest on the domestic charge had been filed. It is unclear who filed the initial complaint against Hobson that led to the warrant being issued.

A review with officials at the MPD was held leading to Hobson's suspension. He posted a $1,000 bond and is currently out of jail.

  13. Suspended MPD officer still facing legal woes
    The Meridian Star
    By Brian Livingston
    August 19, 2009

Daren Dennis Hobson, a Meridian Police Department officer currently on suspension from the force without pay, still faces legal issues.

According to a recent indictment from a March Lauderdale County grand jury, Hobson faces attempted false pretense and forgery charges.

The attempted false pretense charge stems from an incident that allegedly occurred in July 2008 and involved the attempted purchase of a laptop computer from a Meridian electronics business. According to court documents Hobson used the name of another person instead of his own on the credit application form. The forgery offense, said court documents, was in regards to an alleged forged personal check Hobson is said to have tried to pass in May of 2002.

Asked the status of Hobson in terms of a police officer for the department, MPD Chief Benny DuBose said he is on suspension without pay.

Hobson, 38, of 3436 Poplar Springs Road, had been with the department for a little more than a year and was one of the DUI officers on the force. In May, Hobson was recognized in Jackson for making more than 100 DUI arrests in 2008.

    Dear Mr. Livingston,

You reported on Meridian Police Officer Daren Dennis Hobson back in 2008, with a couple of updates since, so I am writing to you - hoping that you will continue to follow-up.

    My blog post:

[MS] Officer Hobson turns himself in on domestic violence/ assault warrant
    Saturday, December 27, 2008
    http://behindthebluewall.blogspot.com/2008/12/ms-officer-hobson-turns-himself-in-on.html

In the comments section of the blog post a couple of anonymous people say they were victims of Hobson, and people have anonymously left a few dates of re-arrests of Officer Hobson.

    ...April 18, 2009... Forgery — Daren D. Hobson, 38, 205 Peachtree St., Meridian...

...Feb. 13,2010 this guy was arrested again for DV...

...He was arrest March 7,2010 Hattiesburg,Ms for Domestic Violence...

    Are these arrests all true?

The first one listed was in the paper, low key - unrelated to his dv arrests, but the other two I don't see in the news at all. Unchecked he could likely escalate to murder. Who is helping / protecting his victims? If he is being arrested and re-arrested it appears that there is a systemic effort going on to keep him from being convicted so that he can keep his job.

This is frightening for people who know there is no use even reporting him. If the subsequent arrests are true he is teflon. Nothing sticks. He must feel like superman.

The media is the only hope.

    Thank you,

Well, it's 2011 and Hobson is still up to his old habits. He has found his way to Lumberton, MS and now he's using his authority as a police officer to threaten law abidig citizens. When I found out about Hobson's background, I posted it on my facebook page and he came after me. I filed a report but nothing has been done and I am seeking help from the state. My stories about Hobson are on www.lumbertonpolitics.blogspot.com

  23. I got pulled over for speeding the other day outside of Elberta and after he ticketed me the officer with him asked for my phone number as he was getting in the car and was going to write it on his hand, strange huh. I was not rude to the officer but I asked him was I required legally to give them my number and he acted as though it was no big deal but then Daren Dennis Hobson jumped out of the car pissed off and said that he was going to place me under arrest, have my bike towed, and put me in the system as a John Doe and lose my paperwork. I had to beg this prick to not do this. He humiliated me in front of this other young officer. Something will be done about this. I will bet that no one in the city of Elberta knows about his history. I wonder if the city councel knows about this guy and how he treats people. I am going to find out!

  24. I called the Elberta Police Dept. today to get their address. I am writing the Chief of Police about Hobson and I'm sending an Open Letter to the newspaper.

    1. Good for you in writing about officer Hobson. I know someone that dated his son. They are extremely bipolar and there was a lot of abuse among the whole family. This girl was harassed while trying to get away from his son. I know a lot more but do not want to disclose my identity. He needs to be removed as an officer and convicted for the women he has abused.

  32. This is Dennis’s son, thought you should know this. I know you never posted what my sister and I wrote before but I am okay with you posting it. My sister has passed away 2 years ago and I have had no contact with Dennis or his son in over 3 years. A man Baly used to work for posted this report on his Facebook page and all the comments are basically saying this is not surprising and of course Baly has been arrested numerous times for domestic and assisting the police. Ironic since his dad is an officer one Summerdale to this day.

Just met him on a dating site. I googled his name and landed on this page. He says he is an Alabama state office working at the state docks searching for illegals and drugs. I’m not going further with him so I can’t verify.
