[Excerpts] Norma Tirado watched Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez in an April news conference detail the charges against a Dolton man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and felt hope. With Alvarez's stand against domestic violence during the news conference, Tirado thought that meant a break could be coming in her sister Irma Rodriguez's murder case. However, after meeting with assistant state's attorneys last week, she's as frustrated as ever. Prosecutors appear to be no closer to filing charges than they were a year ago, she said. When Irma Rodriguez, a 45-year-old Oak Forest mother of three, was found shot dead in the trunk of her car in Midlothian on June 1 of last year, she was days away from finalizing a divorce from her husband Norberto. The two had a tumultuous and sometimes violent 15-year marriage. In 1997, Norberto Rodriguez was charged with attempted first-degree murder after an argument in which he was accused of shooting Irma in the hand. Norberto was acquitted of the charges, but lost his job as a Chicago police officer as a result... After seeing Alvarez on television, Tirado thought it was time to get an update from the Cook County state's attorney on Irma's case. The family met with prosecutors Wednesday, the day after the one-year anniversary of Irma's death. But prosecutors did not have good news for them. When asked on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best) on how strong the case was and how close they were to charging someone, prosecutors gave it a 2, Tirado said. "I was in tears. It's not that they were trying to offend us or hurt us. They were just being honest," she said... [Full article here]
