Hudson Reporter
Aug 02, 2010
[Excerpts] A Jersey City police officer found dead in Bayonne home Sunday morning may have been the victim of a shot to the mouth, which Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said was determined by the state's Regional Medical Examiner's office as a suicide. [Excerpts] A Jersey City police officer was found dead in her Bayonne home this morning as a result of what appears to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head... "This is a difficult situation for the organization, but even more so for her family," Police Chief Tom Comey said... "The impact is deepened by the fact that I have known both father and daughter for many years and our thoughts and prayers will remain with the family throughout this painful time," Comey said, referring to the officer and her father, retired Jersey City Police Lt. Michael Louf. Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said the incident "does not appear to be a homicide"... Jane Louf attended a wedding last night and this morning her boyfriend, who is also a Jersey City police officer, became concerned when she could not be reached... The boyfriend and others went to Louf's home together this morning and found her body... Louf was a police officer for nine years and she worked in the East District, Comey said, adding that she also worked for a period in the Narcotics Unit. In March 2006, Louf was named "Irishwoman Policewoman of the Year" at the One Block Parade celebrating St. Patrick's Day outside the former P.J. Ryan's Pub on Marin Boulevard. Two years ago, Louf rode in the 300-mile Police Unity Tour, a bike ride to Washington, D.C., to raise awareness for officers who died in the line of duty and raise funds to build a memorial in Washington for those officers. "We mourn the loss of a good officer and we will help the Louf family in any way we can during their time of need," Police Director Sam Jefferson said. [Full article here]

  2. EXERPTS FROM COMMENTS:

may you rest in peace and god be with your family during these sad times.... your memory will live on with your fellow brothers and sisters...

...This is so sad. RIP Officer Louf...

...How sad - 31 years old, good career, attractive woman, suicide for what was probably a temporary setback or problem. You just have to shake your head and wonder what was so bad that she thought she had no alternative. RIP...

...My prayers and condolences for Jane, her family and friends. May you find comfort...

...Louf's .45-caliber Glock service weapon was resting on her chest when she was found, reports said.
This is every sad, BUT there is no way the gun would land on her chest. They need to look at this case real close...

...I'm deeply sorry, but I strongly recommend that the Hudson County Prosecutor's office have to look into this more closely, and start asking... My Deepest Condolences to Jane Louf's family and friends!...

...sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...

...My sympathy to her family and friends. May she Rest in Peace...

...Very sad, Thought and prayers out to her family. I don't understand why everyone must say there is more to this...

...Publish the truth about this and you might prevent another murder...

...she was my friends cousin. her sister died too. i think it was around this time.
so sad. the parents burying a 2nd daughter...

...This case looks and sounds like it should be investigated further, the gun found on her chest...

...May she rest in peace, the beautiful woman she was...

...I just dont get why Jane would do this. Is it because she was still sad over her sister's loss of cancer or was it because she wasn't happy, was drinking, and still in an emotional state of mind?. Why wasn't her boyfriend there? I will always wonder about the inside details of this, and also wonder why she allowed the devil to play with her mind Im scared for her.... Sometimes a beautiful smile can really mask the true feelings of ones self...

  4. over a period of several years, I had the privilege of working with Jane Louf and found her to be a kind-hearted, keen-minded, beautiful woman. Jane most certainly had a brilliant, successful future ahead of her, but somehow, she was no longer able to see that.

This is a terribly sad and unbelievable incident. My sincerest condolences to the Louf family and all of Jane's loved ones.

  9. I have known Jane my whole life. She is one of the most beautiful person I know, both inside and out. I was not going to post anything, but some of these post have made me sick.
Jane has the most wonderful mother and father. Her father worked his ass off to give those kids anything they wanted. He put them in the best schools, was always doing something with them...
Going to the bookstores, vacations, plays, parks, etc... And Jane adored her mother. She wanted to be just like her. Her mother was ALWAYS there for all of her kids. She was so proud to be with her, and to look like her. They did everything together. She loved her parents very much, and they did a wonderful job with all of their children. They all are beautiful woman. Michelle a nurse, Jane a police officer, and Susan a teacher. The perfect trio, and I can only hope to have children like that. Those 3 have been my idols since I was small. All beautiful and different. I wanted to be like all of them when I grew up. Michelle had the most beautiful eyes, and a caring heart. Jane had the perfect smile, and is funny as hell, and Susan has the cutest face always did always will, and not only is she the cutest she is very smart...It goes to show you that you can have beauty and brains.
This was a tragic accident, and Jane would never intentionally harm herself or anyone else. That's it. This was not what she wanted. She loved life trust me I know her very well, def better than anyone writing crazy posts. I am so heartbroken for the family, and I hold them all very dear to my heart. Please have some class, and be respectful though this difficult time. Thank you, and remember Jane will always be in our hearts.

  10. I have known Jane personally very well. She has one of the most beautiful families I know.
Her father worked his ass off for his kids. He gave them the best of everything, put them in the best schools. He was a great father who would do anything for them, and loves his 3 girls very much. Her mother is wonderful too. Jane loved her, that is her real best friend. They would travel together, shop together. They did everything together. Jane loved to be told that she looked like her mother, because that was her idol. The 3 sisters, are a image of perfection. All of them completely different, but they just fit. They were and are still my idols. Michelle, and beautiful eyes and a great heart, Jane, the best smile and funny as hell. She could always cheer you up. Susan, has the cutest face, always did always will. She is adorable and intelligent...smarter than anyone I know. She shows you that you can have brains and beauty. They are the perfect family, and my heart is breaking for them. I find some of these posts classless, and insensitive. This was a tragic ACCIDENT, anyone who knew Jane, knew she was happy!!! Please let the family grieve, and show your RESPECT! Jane will never be forgotten and loved by everyone.

  16. A Special Note about the 2011 Memorial Fund Calendar
    NLEOMF.blogspot.com
    Tuesday, November 30, 2010
[Excerpts] ...My Brothers, Yesterday, I received the new 2011 calendar. When I turned to the month of June my heart stopped. A Police Unity Tour Rider looked back at me. That rider is Jersey City Police Officer Jane Louf... During my first Unity Tour Ride in 2008 I met a mental barrier when we approached the bridge in Delaware. I was convinced that I could not make that bridge. There appeared Jane Louf and Mike Stise, Jane saw in my face that I was ready to quit. She told me “ Put your head down and don’t look up. Keep peddling and I’ll stay with you all the way.” I made it! Nothing was impossible to me over the next three days. Jane and I had a long conversation during the 2010 tour. I was upset that I was not on my bike with my team due to setback and had to settle for a ride in the trailer. Next thing I knew Jane was in the trailer with me and in distress. God sometimes places people together in strange ways and circumstances. Now I understood why I was off my bike. When I learned of Jane’s suicide I partially blamed myself for not calling her in over a month. I know from my training that I cannot save everyone but I hear her words over and over in my head “I’ll stay with you all the way.” I feel like I did not do the same for her... [Full article here]

  20. Let's get this case opened. Her boyfriend was a little weird. Jane would never intentionally take her own life. I spoke to her personally within the last 24 hours of her life and was never questioned. People say jane got in a fight that night. If u knew jane she was always a fighter.... She got into plenty of fights but never wound up dead. The last voicemail I had from her was that she needed to tell me something important. I never got the chance to hear it. This is a coverup. Does anyone know how loud a gun shot is? No one heard a gun go off???? Not neighbors, not even her sister in the other room? How do you make a silencer to kill yourself?

  21. Jane had everything to live for. She was beautiful, made money, was not in a dire financial situation, she had people who loved her, and she would never want her parents to lose another child. Let's take a look at her boyfriend. I heard the gun was not found on her chest. It was moved before police came there. Also- he answered the door with no shirt on or shoes. Why if he just got home and found her?supposedly CPR was preformed on jane. Why was her body on a couch? Everyone knows including a police office that you pull the person to the floor a hard surface before performing CPR.

  22. Justice for jane. The gun was not found on her chest. They said CPR was done but her body was never brought to the floor. U need a hard surface for CPR. Anyone knows that especially another cop. The boyfriend answered the door with no shirt on. Justice for jane.
