[Excerpts] In a jailhouse interview with The Herald Bulletin late Saturday night, Michelle D. Weatherspoon denied hitting Anderson police Sgt. William Casey Saturday and said their dispute stemmed from unpaid child support... she said she called 911 and told dispatchers she was having a dispute with Casey. She said Casey, who was off-duty at the time, also called police on his cell phone. When police arrived, she said, everything spun out of control. She denies hitting Casey, as alleged in a police report. She also denies that she resisted arrest or was acting disorderly... She claims Casey exaggerated the incident to derail her political career. She's running for Anderson City Council District 4... People are going to be more likely to believe his version of the events over hers, she said. "We're not dealing with a thug on the street - he's a police officer," "He's Bill Casey. He's on television. He's one of the spokesmen for the Anderson Police Department"... Ever since their relationship began to wane, she said, she's been harassed by law enforcement...

[Excerpts] ...WEATHERSPOON'S alleged involvement in an ugly incident Saturday casts a dark shadow on her discretion. After allegedly attacking a male acquaintance, she was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement... We do not endorse a candidate in this race.

[Excerpts] Two Anderson Police Department sergeants have filed a federal lawsuit against the city's former mayor and former police chief, accusing them of tarnishing the officers' reputations. In their lawsuit filed Friday, Steve Ohlheiser and Bill Casey claim their reputations were damaged when information about a confidential internal affairs investigation was leaked to The Herald Bulletin in 2003... The lawsuit stems from information leaked to The Herald Bulletin that Ohlheiser and Casey were the subject of an internal affairs probe. That case arose from a January 2003 incident in which Casey was moving items from his residence during a divorce. A family member helping with the move found drug paraphernalia and turned it over to Ohlheiser... As the shift commander, Ohlheiser discarded the material, saying no crime had been committed. Casey said the paraphernalia were props that he used during training seminars and classes in the community...

Clearly and concisely, Anderson City Council candidate Michelle Weatherspoon pleaded not guilty to charges of domestic battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest at an arraignment Monday morning at Anderson City Court... The charges Weatherspoon faces include disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail; resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail, if convicted. Weatherspoon serves on Anderson’s board of zoning appeals and plan commission. As a Republican, she is challenging incumbent Democrat Ollie Dixon for his District 4 city council seat. She has said that her chances of beating Dixon at this juncture are slim... In addition to the alleged battery, the police report says that Weatherspoon was “yelling and cussing” outside Casey’s home when an officer arrived. The police report indicates that Weatherspoon refused to cooperate with an officer who was trying to subdue her. ...
