A Shreveport police officer and his girlfriend were arrested this morning after a domestic disturbance that revolved around her not returning his truck. Michael Welch, 31, of Shreveport was arrested for misdemeanor domestic abuse battery. Crystal Nicholas, 27, of Shreveport was booked for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. in the 6200 block of Bert Kouns after Nicholas returned in Welch's Dodge pickup, police said. Welch had reported the truck stolen after Nicholas took it two nights earlier and didn't return home or call him, police said. The fight happened when Nicholas came home with the truck this morning, police said. Both Welch and Nicholas were slightly injured during the fight, police said. "SPD is proactive when it comes to enforcing the law. It is unfortunate when an officer is among those we deal with, but we address it just like any other citizen," Police Chief Henry Whitehorn said in a statement this morning. Welch, who went to work at the Police Department in March 2005, is on paid administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation.
