AMHERST — Lorain police Officer Corey Earl is facing misdemeanor criminal charges for allegedly making harassing phone calls to his ex-wife. Amherst police Lt. Joe Kucirek declined to provide specifics on the allegations against Earl but said the 47-year-old officer turned himself in at the police station on Sunday afternoon and was released after being served with two counts of telephone harassment. Earl, the former president of the Lorain police union, is on extended medical leave after suffering a series of strokes last summer... Earl was investigated for alleged harassing text messages he had sent and phone calls he had made to his on-again-off-again girlfriend late last year by Lorain police, but the investigation didn’t result in charges. Laura Earl has complained to police about her ex-husband several times in the past, including for violating a temporary protection order that was put in place after he reportedly threatened to kill himself with a gun in their home, according to police. That charge was thrown out after the protection order was dropped. Earl also has had a string of disciplinary problems within the department in recent years, including reportedly threatening to beat a county corrections officer with a baseball bat, writing a joke traffic ticket and pulling over the ex-husband of a woman he was dating...
