[Excerpts] My job today, with photographer Billy Hong, was to help our viewers know the woman who was murdered last night in her home. I knew this when I woke up this morning; she had three children, two girls and a boy, she was a deputy sheriff, and her 17-year-old son was charged with shooting her and her daughters to death. As a deputy sheriff, we know she was a woman in a uniform, an authority figure. We knew there was more to her, and the challenge was to find out what that was, what she was, and tell you... Several said her smile was beautiful, that she was such a happy person all the time she made others happy just by being around. They wouldn’t talk about her son, the one charged with murder, because they didn’t want to do anything to cause problems for the police investigation. But they did say this: ALL her children were the joy of her life. And they repeated it; ALL her children...

Here is the full text of the statement by Sheriff Butch Conway on the death of deputy Joy Deleston and her two daughters:

"It is heartbreaking to lose someone in the way that we lost her. I am very angry that these three lives were so violently taken from us in a totally senseless and cowardly act. At the same time, I am grateful to everyone who has reached out to help us during this tragedy including the Gwinnett County Police Department, Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter and members of his department. I especially want to thank DeKalb Sheriff Thomas Brown who graciously stepped in last night and offered to house Mr. Terrell in the DeKalb jail. I would ask that everyone please keep Deputy Deleston's family and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."

A Gwinnett County teenager was arrested early Friday and charged with the Thursday night shooting deaths of his two young sisters and his mother, a Gwinnett sheriff's deputy.

Anthony Tyrone Terrell, 17, was being held Friday in the DeKalb County Jail, Gwinnett police Cpl. Illana Spellman said. The sophomore at Central Gwinnett High School was charged with three counts of murder and three counts of aggravated assault.

The shootings occurred about 8 p.m. Thursday at the family's home at 415 Madison Chase Drive, in the Lawrenceville area.

Terrell's mother, 39-year-old Joy Deleston, was an actress who appeared in locally produced films as well as a 7-1/2 year veteran of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office. She previously worked for the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office in South Georgia. She and her daughters, Micaiah, 11, and Jelani, 4, all died of gunshot wounds, according to Gwinnett County police.

Micaiah was a sixth-grader at Richards Middle School, said Sloan Roach, spokeswoman for Gwinnett County schools. Roach said grief counselors were sent Friday to her school and Central Gwinnett.

The deputy's 17-year-old son, who lived in the house, arrived while police were at the house.

"Investigators interviewed Mr. Terrell and as a result of the interview, there was enough probable cause to charge him with the murder of his mother and two sisters," Spellman said. The motive for the shootings was still under investigation, she said.

"Anger," Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway said when reached by phone and asked his reaction to the crime. "I've got a deputy dead and two children. We just want to find out who did it and why."

Deleston worked in the sex crimes unit of the sheriff's office and interacted with registered sex offenders, maintaining a database of their addresses in Gwinnett, according to Schiralli.

She was a single mother and aspiring actress who had played supporting roles in several local independent films, such as "Dark Secrets" and "The Effect." IronE Singleton, a writer, director and actor from Atlanta, acted in several movies with her in recent years.

He was devastated upon hearing news of her death Thursday night.

"Every time I was around she seemed like she was a great mom. She seemed like she wanted the best for her children and she was doing all she can," Singleton said.

Singleton said he and others in the insular Atlanta filmmaking community had been discussing the slayings all morning. Everyone was baffled about what could have prompted Terrell to lash out at his mother and two younger sisters, Singleton said.

Singleton said he last spoke to the 17-year-old at a movie screening in November.

"[Terrell] was a good kid, that's the reason why it's so disturbing because you just didn't see that coming," Singleton said. "He seemed very humble. He was respectful."

Deleston was a supporting actress in three short films directed by Robinson Vil and his Atlanta-based production company Villain Pictures -- "The Effect," "Riff," and "Dark Secrets."

Vil said he met Deleston when she auditioned for a role in 2004 and immediately fell in love with her personality. He wrote parts for her in all his subsequent movies, which she happily took even though Vil couldn't afford pay the actors.

"I told her, wherever this goes you're coming with me," Vil said. "She was a very good actress. So now with this happening, it's just like a big blow."

At the scene of the 8 p.m. shooting, police spokesman Dave Schiralli said officers responded to a call from a neighbor of shots fired in the Madison Chase subdivision near Simonton Road. Schiralli said police found a bullet hole in a house next door, then went to the home, where they found the deputy and her 11-year-old dead inside the front door. The officers then went upstairs and found the 4-year-old.

One neighbor, Jim Clark, lives near the deputy's house and said he was "shocked and horrified" to learn of the crime.

"You never think something like this is going to happen in your neighborhood," he said.

He said the deputy and her family had been living there for about a year. Clark's family was happy to hear that a law enforcement officer was going to be their neighbor.

"We were excited about it," Clark said. "It's good to have a sheriff's car on your street."

But Clark said he had not gotten to know the deputy personally.

"She seemed friendly. She waved," he said.

Clark said he didn't hear gunshots or anything to alert him to the crime, but police officers still interviewed him.

"I didn't know about it until a neighbor called and said police cars were all up and down the street," Clark said.

Conway said he was at his home, nursing a bad back, when a sheriff's sergeant called to tell him what happened. He and numerous other sheriff's officials went to the crime scene.

    Friends, Neighbors Shocked By Murders
    11alive.com
    Reported by: Jon Shirek
    Reported by: Kevin Rowson
    Web Editor: Michael King
    Last Modified: 2/29/2008 7:24:42 PM

Friends and neighbors are shocked by new details in the triple murder of a Gwinnett County deputy and her young daughters. Police said her 17 year old son confessed to killing them.

Gwinnett County police now have recovered the gun that was used to kill Deputy Joy Deleston and her daughters. It was recovered by a dive team at an undisclosed body of water late Friday afternoon.

That information bolsters the case against Deleston's son, but gets investigators no closer to answering why.

When police entered the home shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday night, they found 11-year-old Micaiah Deleston's body just inside the doorway. A little further in, they found Deputy Joy Deleston -- they both had been shot. Upstairs, they found 4-year-old Jelani Deleston.

About 35 minutes after they arrived on the scene, 17-year-old Anthony Terrell Jr. walked in the house, and after questioning, he told police he killed them. He also gave them two locations to search for the murder weapon.

"With the help of Hall County Dive Team, they searched areas where he said it would possibly be, and we were able to locate it in one of the locations," said Gwinnett County Police Officer David Shiralli.

But they couldn't tell us what body of water it was found in, or whether the weapon was Deputy Deleston's service weapon. By early Friday afternoon, a flower arrangement was placed by the family's mailbox, and sheriff's deputies secured the home until Deputy Deleston's out of town relatives could get there.

Neighbors said they were glad to have a law enforcement officer in their Madison Chase subdivision -- not that there is a crime problem, but, they would have never guessed if one occurred, it would happen at the home you would least expect it to happen.

"I sound like Johnny One-Note, but it's so shocking, because you don't expect something like this to happen," said neighbor Jeff Beaird.

Anthony Terrell is being held in the DeKalb County Jail. That's for security reasons, because his mother was a sheriff's deputy at the Gwinnett County Jail. Terrell waived his right for an initial appearance, so the next time he appears in court, it will be for a preliminary hearing sometime in the next week or so.

One of Joy Deleston's off-duty passions was acting in films.

The director who helped discover her said she had a star quality that could have taken her to the top.

Deleston's friends in her neighborhood, her fellow employees at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, and her co-workers in the Atlanta film community said that to take one look at her, in person or on film, made you think you could fall in love with her.

"Yeah, she was a natural," said Villain Pictures director Robinson Vil. "It's like she's been doing it forever."

Deleston was hungry, ambitious, driven to make it as an actress, said her director at Atlanta's Villain Films. And the camera loved her.

"She would have made it, eventually, because that's how good she was, how determined she was, so I had no doubt that she would have made it," Vil said.

Vil showed a recent photo of Deleston with her three children. He said she and her children adored each other and were proud of each other.

"Those kids are so well-behaved," Vil said. "You know, like, if you saw Anthony, you would never, not in a million years, guess that he would do something like that. He was very laid back, very reserved, you know, you talk to him, always smiling."

Deleston's producer at Villain Films said she brought calm and laughter to the set, to the crews. He said they had just written a role for her, in their first feature-length film that's about to go into production.

"You're never really gone, in my opinion, until you're forgotten," said producer Kenneth Devon. "And I just think that she'll live on timelessly in our films and other projects that she's done."

Her friends and fellow deputies at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said Deleston was beautiful on the outside and on the inside.

Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway said, "It is heartbreaking to lose someone in the way that we lost her. I am very angry that these three lives were so violently taken from us in a totally senseless and cowardly act."

Conway goes on to thank everyone who has reached out to help the department deal with the tragic losses

  5. my son and jelani were BEST friends at their pre-school. they were ALWAYS together at school..most of the time, they only played with each other!! he is heartbroken after hearing that jelani and her mother and sister are no longer here with us. he knows that they are in Heaven with Jesus, but he misses them. i took him to the build-a-bear workshop yesterday so that he could make a bear in her honor. he put THREE hearts in the bear that he named "jealni"..one for each of them. he even dressed it in a police uniform to remember joy, whom he loved as well. everyday when she would pick jelani up from school, she would ask him: "andrue, did you have a good day today??" and he would answer her: "i was a little bit good and a little bit bad, but i had a good day!!" it was so cute. im glad that he has a lot of good memories of them. we are making a collage of pics of them to hang on his wall. i know that we, along with many other people will miss these wonderful people TERRIBLY!! RIP joy, micaiah and jelani!!

  7. Juvenile appears to have just been another ABSENT dad. Did Jelani even ever meet her dad or have a relationship with him? He was arrested for not paying the support, and I'd guess after that realized he HAD to.

It's not Juvenile's fault though that the news is focusing on HIM instead. They do that to sell themselves.

A memorial service will be held this week in Charleston, S.C., for a Gwinnett deputy and her two daughters who were slain Thursday at their home in Lawrenceville.

A date and time for the service for Joy Deleston, 39, and her daughters, Micaiah Alique, 11, and Jelani Ayahna Deleston, 4, have not been chosen, said a representative from Alexander's Mortuary in Fairburn, on the Southside of Atlanta, which is handling funeral arrangements.

Deleston's mother and brother live in South Carolina, according to an obituary placed by the family.

Family members gathered for a memorial service for Deleston and her daughters at Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula on Sunday. Media were not permitted to attend.

Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway said he attended the memorial service Sunday along with several hundred people and found it very moving.

"It was tough," Conway said. "They had open caskets, which I didn't expect. It was hard to look at the children."

Deleston's son, 17-year-old Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr., is charged with murder in the shooting deaths of his mother and sisters. Authorities found the three bodies inside of Deleston's two-story house on Madison Chase Drive on Thursday night after someone reported hearing gunshots inside the Madison Chase subdivision off Simonton Road.

Jelani was the daughter of rapper Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray.

Terrell reportedly implicated himself in the slayings when police questioned him and told investigators where he disposed of the gun.

Authorities have not released information about the motive.

Terrell is being held without bond at the DeKalb County jail. A probable cause hearing for Terrell is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Gwinnett County Magistrate Court.

Rapper Juvenile Trying to Cope with Daughter’s Death
    By Leigh Culbert
    AP
    March 01 2008
...The manager for the rap star Juvenile says he is “shocked and devastated” by the shooting death of his young daughter, the girl’s mother and another child. Aubrey Francis says the 32-year-old rapper is still trying to cope with the death of 4-year-old Jelani; her mother, 39-year-old Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputy Joy Deleston; and the woman’s daughter Micaiah, 11. Their bodies were found Thursday night in their home, and the girls’ 17-year-old brother, Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr., is accused. Gwinnett County court records show that Deleston brought a paternity lawsuit in 2004, claiming that Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray, was Jelani’s father. Both parties later agreed Juvenile was the father. Francis says that Juvenile, who is in New Orleans, had been making regular child support payments.

    From last month's news:

Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Joy Deleston's son, Anthony Tyrone Terrell, was sentenced to two life sentenced for killing her and her two daughters on Feb. 28, 2008. Terrell's half-sister Micaiah saw her mom get shot and started screaming. Terrell turned and fired several times, killing her. Then he went upstairs to find 4-year-old Jelani and then shot her twice in the chest. Sheriff Butch Conway issued a statement saying justice had been served, "even though it can never bring back Joy and her two beautiful little girls."
