Off-Duty NYPD Cop Found Dead; Suicide Suspected
WCBS-TV New York, NY
Feb 18, 2008
An off-duty New York City police officer has been found dead in a park, and police suspect he shot himself with his own gun. New York City police aren't releasing the officer's name, but said the 21-year-old man had been with the 115th precinct in Queens for just a few months. His body was found at about 8 a.m. Monday in Poppenhusen Park in the College Point section of Queens. Police suspect the officer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

UPDATE:

On February 18th 2008, 21-year old New York Police Officer Thomas Wick, son of New York Fire Department Battalion Chief Thomas Wick, took his own life in Poppenhusen Park, Queens. His mom found a note, according to the news, that complained of his job & hours. News reports say she went looking for him and found his body in the park - how awful for her. One report said she heard a gunshot before she went running to find him. The news doesn't always get it right, so only those closest to him know.

Deputy Inspector John Lavelle, commander of the 115th Precinct:
"He was only here a short time, but he was well-respected by his supervisors and his peers," Lavelle said. "We ask you to keep his family in your prayers."

  1. With the articles I found there was only one photo, Thomas with a sheet over him against a fence.

That is so sad. He had a face, a smile, and people who loved him.

So I opted to not post that picture.

  4. I'll remember his tragic early death once in a blue moon. I went to elementary school with him. We were classmates in fifth grade. R.I.P., Thomas.
