Officer accidentally shoots, kills son, police say

[Excerpts] An auxiliary police officer accidentally shot and killed his adult son tonight at their Marysville home, authorities said. Marysville police say that Michael Hopkins shot his son, 22-year-old Kyle S. Hopkins, in the chest with a .308-caliber rifle... Assistant Police Chief Glenn Nicol said authorities have no reason to think the shooting was anything but an accident. Nicol said the family is devastated. Michael Hopkins is an auxiliary officer with the Kenton Police Department in Hardin County, about 60 miles northwest of Columbus, Nicol said. His son had some affiliation with the U.S. Coast Guard, Nicol said. The two were examining the rifle that, according to gun magazines and the Internet, is a highly accurate sniper rifle, Nicol said... No charges have been filed, and the case remains under investigation by the Marysville Police Department, the Union County prosecutor’s office and the county coroner...
