EXCERPTS - Attorneys for Millville police sergeant Robert Vanaman are asking a state court to order the release of his deceased wife's counseling records for use at his upcoming murder trial... The records would be used to support a defense claim that the sergeant fatally shot his wife, 37-year-old Barbara Vanaman, as an act of self-defense. Robert Vanaman was treated for knife wounds he said he received during the deadly domestic dispute in the couple's Millville home May 11, 2006... The brief states Maple Shade resident Nina Kardos, a social worker who does marriage counseling and therapy, treated Barbara Vanaman. Kardos also held two marriage counseling sessions with the couple, according to the brief. Kardos has refused to release the records without a court order...
