It sounds to me like he wanted to contain the imminent mess that he knew her brain was going to make.
Their 13 year old daughter walked in and screamed.
THANK GOD -- he lowered the weapon and walked out of the room!
He was able to plea down from felony "assault with a deadly weapon" to misdemeanor battery by taking some CLASSES on domestic violence.
The department said they were going to fire him but ALLOWED him to retire instead.
"Retired" should mean you made it through - that you went in as a cop and left as a cop. It should NOT mean that an officer left as a criminal, making some sweet deal to get paid right along with all the officers who did NOT hold guns to their own wives' heads while making terroristic threats... creating nightmares in their own children.
He should have been fired.
And what does this really say to his victim(s)? What does it say to victims of officer-involved domestic violence who read that? He's getting paid now, regardless... with a respected title.
As usual, the news articles did not address the wife's safety or how her fears would be addressed. Was she supported or was she pressured? When he walked out of jail was he under a protection order or did he return home?
I am adding this family to my prayers whether they are together or apart. I didn't say his name for my own reasons, but here are the articles:
