[Excerpts] A Staten Island mom accused of killing her fire marshal husband is guilty of the crime and "the evidence will show that there is no reasonable possibility that anyone else could have killed Doug Mercereau," prosecutors said today. Janet Redmond-Mercereau, 39, is accused of killing her hubby, who was found dead in bed in the couple's home in the Oakwood section the morning of Dec. 2, 2007. His gun was by his side. An autopsy later ruled out suicide in the death of the 12-year FDNY veteran. "She was the only person who had something to gain from his death," said Assistant DA Yolanda Rudich. "There were three gunshots in a nearby room inside her house on a quiet Sunday morning and the defendant claims she never heard a thing." During opening arguments today in Staten Island Supreme Court, defense lawyer Joseph Benfante countered that notion and suggested one or more unidentified people came through the backdoor of the house, found Doug Mercereau's gun in a bag and killed him while Janet was at a store on the night before the body was found... The couple - married for 12 years - had a rocky relationship over the past few years, with Redmond-Mercereau complaining that her 38-year-old husband had mocked her for gaining weight following a thyroid condition, authorities said. When detectives arrived hours after the shooting, Redmond-Mercereau told them she had showered several times before dialing 911... Investigators found Mercereau's gun - cleaned of fingerprints - near his body and her clothes tumbling in the dryer. The DA's office has said she "washed" the fingerprints off the gun. At the time, prosecutors also said she coached her two daughters - then-ages 5 and 6 - to give "false versions" of what happened when interviewed by child-welfare caseworkers. [Full article here]

[Excerpts] A callous Staten Island woman accused of pumping three bullets into her sleeping husband's head sanitized the murder scene before dialing 911, a prosecutor charged Tuesday. Janet Redmond-Mercereau sat stone-faced as Assistant District Attorney Yolanda Rudich said there was "no reasonable possibility" that anyone else had killed Douglas Mercereau... Her husband, a 38-year-old fire marshal and rising FDNY star, was killed as he slept on Dec. 2, 2007. The 39-year-old mother of two daughters never flinched as prosecutors showed a graphic photo of her husband lying in their bed, blood leaking from his head... [Full article here]
