A Cleveland police officer was charged Friday after authorities said he beat up his live-in girlfriend, breaking a bone in her face. Patrolman Jionta Gary, 23, was charged with felonious assault and was suspended from duty without pay pending the outcome of the case, said police Lt. Thomas Stacho. "He allegedly battered the victim so severely that she suffered a fractured orbital bone resulting in her confinement to MetroHealth Medical Center," Stacho said. The victim told police that Gary threatened to kill her if she reported the assault to police. Gary was arrested by Internal Affairs detectives when he reported for work at the 2nd District police headquarters Thursday afternoon. He is being held in the City Jail. Bond was set at $100,000. The prosecutor said bond was set high because of fear for the safety of the victim, who shared a home on East 81st Street with Gary. Gary was hired in October 2007. Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association President Stephen Loomis cautioned that Gary is innocent until proved guilty and said that the union was attempting to get him out of jail on bond.
