[Excerpts] On April 10, Middletown Police officers went to Glendale Avenue for a domestic between husband and wife. The wife met officers at Westfield Fire Department on East Street with fresh scratches and bruises on her face. Brian Flaherty, 51, was at the residence with scratches on his face, saying his wife assaulted him... She called family members earlier who allegedly witnessed Flaherty punch her father in the face and the father punch him in the face. Flaherty then grabbed a baseball bat but the family was able to restrain him... He allegedly admitted to police he hit his wife but only to prevent her from buying drugs. While being processed, he pulled away from the officer and balled his fists in a fighting stance. When put in a cell, police said he climbed on a sink and hit the camera casing until it broke. After being put in a padded cell, he used the zipper of his pants to cut gouges of padding from the door. Flaherty then allegedly told police he was having a heart attack and was brought to Middlesex Hospital for evaluation. At he hospital, he spit in the officer’s face.... Police say the victim stated the accused threatening to kill her more than once during the incident, which a witness confirmed. Flaherty was charged with disorderly conduct, third-degree assault, second-degree threatening, first-degree criminal mischie, assault of a police officer and interfering with an officer. [Excerpts] A city man was arrested for a second and third time shortly after being charged with assaulting his wife Sunday. Brian Flaherty, 51, arrived at police headquarters to pick up items left there after his arrest for assault. While in the lobby he became unruly, police said, and was charged with disorderly conduct. While in the interview holding cell, Flaherty allegedly tried to hang himself with his belt... Flaherty allegedly spit at officers when they tried to help him. Hunter's Ambulance was called to transport Flaherty to Middlesex Hospital for a police-ordered examination. He allegedly kicked an EMT in the chest and chin... Flaherty would later tell hospital staff that he would kill himself if he had to spend the night in a jail cell, according to the arrest report. He was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer. Flaherty is also facing multiple charges, including third-degree assault, threatening and assault on a police officer after an incident earlier Sunday... Flaherty is free on $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court May 2, at which time he is expected to plea to the charges, according to court documents... [Excerpts] A former city police officer was arrested on threatening charges after a warrant was served Monday. Brian Flaherty, 51, 71 Glendale Ave., was charged with three counts of second-degree threatening, his fourth arrest in less than a month. Specific details are not known as the arrest warrant is currently unavailable, police said. Flaherty, a former Middletown police officer who left the force about six years ago, was first arrested on April 10 following an argument with a woman... The suspect was arrested again a short time later after returning to police headquarters to retrieve items left there after his earlier arrest... He was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer. Flaherty is also facing multiple charges, including third-degree assault, threatening and assault on a police officer after his initial arrest.
