[Excerpts] ...When police arrived at the upscale home on Chestnut Drive, they discovered a horrible, heart-breaking crime scene: 66-year-old Betty-Jo Frank and her 39-year-old daughter, Keitha Frank Turner, had both been viciously attacked... [Keitha's] four children, Karissa, Jarius, Hayden and 5-year-old Kennedy were all on the second floor of the home when the slaughter took place. Cops say little Kennedy was actually sleeping in bed with her mom when the violence shattered their peaceful rest. What the Turner children witnessed and heard that night, no child should ever have to know.... Keitha and James had been married for 14 years, but friends and family say the relationship had been on the rocks for years because of his controlling, jealous, bullying behavior. Investigators learned that Keitha and the children had allegedly endured years of physical and mental abuse from James Turner and had finally mustered up the courage to leave him on the day of the murders. Gene and Betty-Jo Frank, founded the Church of Living Waters in Rosenberg in 1978. The congregation flourished and grew under their leadership, growing to encompass a state-accredited, church-based school where Keitha served as a teacher and principal. Cops also learned that 45-year-old Turner has a history of scaring the women who fall for him away with brutish, jealous behavior. Turner's daughter, Karissa, told AMW that she first witnessed her father physically attack her mother when she was just 6 years old. "It got really bad, so we were going to leave and as we were walking out to the car he came out and stopped her and kind of dragged her. He had a knife in his hand. [Excerpts] FLORENCE — A jury deliberated for a little more than an hour Monday before finding former Florence County sheriff’s deputy Timothy Poole guilty on all federal charges related to the deaths of his mother and stepfather... Poole, 36, was led into the courtroom, where the clerk announced he’d been found guilty of all counts in the 20-count federal indictment that alleged he shot and killed his mother, Linda Poole-Hilton, and her husband, Henry “Bubba” Hilton Jr., so he could gain money from their multi-million dollar estate. The victims’ family and friends held hands and wept quietly as the clerk read each count of the indictment and repeated “guilty.” Tim Poole showed little emotion. His wife, Jodie Anne Poole, sat just a few rows behind him, crying with the announcement of each count. He now faces up to 400 years in prison... Poole’s trial began Feb. 22 at the McMillan Federal Building in Florence before U.S. District Court Judge Bryan Harwell. Truslow didn’t call any witnesses, and Poole did not testify. Highway Patrol Trooper Julius “Jay” Duke testified Tuesday he and Timothy Poole were once friends, but his attitude began to change with time.... Duke said Timothy Poole was once very humble and the two had a lot in common, but that changed and Timothy Poole became more about money... Jodie Ann Poole is charged in the same federal indictment as her husband and admitted he asked her to lie to investigators about his whereabouts on the night his the Hiltons were slain. [Excerpts] FLORENCE — Family members of Timothy Poole and his slain mother and stepfather testified about their relationship with the victims Wednesday, the eighth day of Poole’s federal trial... Henry Hilton’s son, Michael Hilton, testified his father was a hard-working farmer from Dorchester County who farmed about 150 acres of land at the time of his death. He also worked at Lakewood Plantation, which was purchased by Poole-Hilton’s first husband, Richard “Dick” Poole, a Charleston-area businessman.
Michael Hilton testified his father mentioned Timothy Poole’s behavior toward his mother and wasn’t happy about it... Poole-Hilton’s daughter, Tammy Flanders, also took the witness stand Tuesday and talked about her mother. [Excerpts] FLORENCE — The brother of the man accused of shooting their mother and stepfather to death over money took the witness stand Thursday and told the jury how he confronted the suspect.
Rick Poole, the brother of Timothy Poole who is standing trial in federal court in connection with the slayings, told the jury he visited his brother while he was being held at a Georgetown jail after being arrested and charged with the murders of Linda Poole-Hilton and her husband, Henry “Bubba” Hilton Jr., whose bodies were found Aug. 2, 2006... Assistant U.S Attorneys Rose Mary Parham and Buddy Bethea told Rick Poole he had to refrain from mentioning certain things while the jury was present, such as the drowning of their younger brother, their biological mother and an instance where he said Timothy Poole threw a knife through the door at him. Those things were ruled inadmissable... “I asked him, ‘Did you kill mom?’” Rick Poole said, after the jury returned to the courtroom. He said he looked his brother in the eye, but Timothy Poole wouldn’t answer him... Poole-Hilton’s brother, William Bright, and two of her closest friends also testified Thursday. Both of Poole-Hilton’s friends testified she often talked about her children and was becoming increasingly upset with Timothy Poole because he’d squandered thousands of dollars and kept asking her for more money. Margaret Murphy, Poole-Hilton’s partner in their Pawleys Island business, As For Me And My House, said she remembers Poole-Hilton was excited because Timothy Poole was going to start his own business and she was lending him the money for it.... Domestic violence is an epidemic in this country and around the world. Some 1.3 million U.S. women are assaulted by their intimate partners each year; one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime; and nearly a third of female homicide victims are killed by their intimate partners. The economic costs are staggering as well – an estimated $37 billion each year in medical treatment alone. And while domestic violence occurs in about 10% of families overall, that rate doubles, perhaps quadruples, when we look at violence in police families. In two separate national studies, 40% of police officers self-reported that they had used violence against their domestic partners within the last year. 1, 2

This reality creates unimaginable levels of danger and barriers to protection for the victims. After all, who do you call for protection when your batterer is the police, armed and dangerous at all times, with “insider” access to the courts and methods of stalking and harassment that other batterers only dream of?

But more fundamentally, the police officer-as-batterer lies at the foundation of the criminal justice system’s stubborn refusal to adequately enforce domestic violence laws: when a woman calls police to report domestic violence, her chances are at least two out of five that the officer who responds has recently beaten his own partner ... and gotten away with it! It is in part this dynamic that has created “unequal justice” for domestic violence victims everywhere.

FOCUS ON POLICE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

As a women’s rights activist focused on transforming the criminal justice system’s handling of violence against women for nearly twenty years, Tanya Brannan, working through the grassroots group Purple Berets, quickly zeroed in on the issue of accountability. Certainly that involved accountability for the batterers themselves, who often had five or more arrests before receiving even a slap on the wrist from a judge.

“But even more importantly,” says Brannan, “we’ve focused on holding the system itself accountable – from the officer responding to the 911 call, to the social worker who removes the children because the woman can’t protect them from her partner’s violence; from the district attorney who repeatedly fails to file criminal charges, to the judge whose sentence of probation for the batterer turns into a death sentence for the victim.” Brannan and co-organizer Susan Shaw, community organizer and narrative therapist, see focusing on battering cops as a radical, transformative strategy for improving, not just domestic violence law enforcement, but law enforcement overall.

As long as police agencies coddle the violent batterers within their ranks, we’re never going to change the reality for those ‘civilian’ women whose lives may depend on that responding officer’s handling of her crime report. And as long as a significant percentage of gun-toting police officers are known to be violent, we are sure to continue experiencing the current level of cultural violence, both in our homes and in the streets.

PROJECT SYNOPSIS

No other crime victim is so utterly trapped as the police officer’s domestic partner. She is threatened with death if she reports; dismissed as crazy in internal “investigations” that are little more than a closing of the ranks around the offender; and laughed off by district attorneys when asked when charges will be filed. For the rare woman who does break free, she finds herself hunted from house to house and state to state, afraid she will be arrested on a trumped-up crime, then “battered” again in family court, often to lose her children to the violent spouse. Some of these women have lived un-derground for years rather than risk almost certain death if her batterer finds her.


WITH THIS PROJECT, WE HOPE TO:

1. Give voice to the women who have been battered by violent police officers by conducting interviews for radio and print publication. Their stories are universally harrowing; the danger palpable.

2. Document how the various criminal justice agencies responded to these women’s complaints.

3. Bring these women’s stories to the national media, thereby educating the public and policy makers to the problem and creating a drumbeat for change.

The plan is to produce and widely distribute an investigative report focusing on the different aspects of the issue. Interviews will be selected over a broad geographic area within the U.S., including big cities and small, more rural towns.

THEMES WILL INCLUDE:

• Conduct within the department – interaction with the victim, handling of internal affairs investigation, involvement in criminal investigation, discipline.
• Criminal prosecution, including hopes and pitfalls, lackadaisical attitude of district attorneys.
• Repercussions in family court.
• Safety issues – women who go underground, move continually, etc.
• Social pressure. (Eg., most police families socialize only with other police families. Thus the victims are pressured from all sides not to report and socially isolated if they do.)
• How the issues of race and class intersect.

A joint investigation by the Chattanooga Police Department Internal Affairs Division and the Major Crimes Division (Domestic Violence Unit) has led to the arrest of a Chattanooga Police Officer. Officer Carlos Woodruff, a 15 year veteran was placed under arrest after police were called to his residence and were told by his wife of the assault. A 15-year veteran of the Chattanooga Police Department has been arrested and charged with domestic assault, a department spokeswoman said today. Officer Carlos Woodruff was placed under arrest after police were called to his home and told by his wife of the assault, Lt. Kim Noorbergen said. She said Officer Woodruff has been relieved of duty. The police department’s internal affairs division and the major crimes division’s domestic violence unit participated in the investigation, she said. [LINK]

[NV] Las Vegas police family (gun enthusiasts) justify unsecured weapons even AFTER their 2-year old shoots himself

 ...His wife [Shawnee Bledsoe] said the boys are taught "not to touch guns"...

Las Vegas Police Officer Jared Bledsoe's 2 year old shot himself on February 6th, and just this past Monday his condition was lifted from critical. A month of avoidable intense misery. This family's love of, and full trust in, their weapons evidently outweighed any parental instincts. This isn't even an accident like most kid shootings. This was pure endangerment. I am glad to see that the outcome for this officer is that he will no longer be an officer - one way or another he loses his job. Maybe people who are as deliberately careless with their home arsenals as this couple will see these consequences and rethink their gun safety plan.

...[Las Vegas Police Officer] Jared Bledsoe told detectives that he batted the gun off his son's chest and began applying pressure to the boy's abdomen. The bullet had gone into the boy's abdomen, through his small bowel, liver, transverse colon, diaphragm, lung and arm, according to the warrant... A Las Vegas police officer and his wife have been charged after their 2-year-old son shot himself with his father's service weapon. Jared Bledsoe and Shawnee Bledsoe, both 27, each face a count of child endangerment with substantial bodily harm. The couple allegedly left their youngest son in a room where a loaded handgun was stored in a night stand. A warrant released by the Clark County district attorney's office says police deemed that unsafe. About a half-hour after putting the boy to bed a gunshot rang out. The boy's parents ran to the room to find their wounded son on his back and the night stand drawer open. The bullet went through the child's abdomen, lung and arm. "We believe that parents that have loaded firearms in their homes should secure them," Clark County District Attorney David Roger said. State law requires parents to securely store their firearms... Jared Bledsoe told detectives that he batted the gun off his son's chest and began applying pressure to the boy's abdomen. The bullet had gone into the boy's abdomen, through his small bowel, liver, transverse colon, diaphragm, lung and arm, according to the warrant... In interviews with investigators, the Bledsoes expressed a need to have guns in the house for protection. Shawnee Bledsoe, who told police that her older sister was murdered at a young age, said she sometimes keeps a gun under her pillow at night when her husband is at work. But they did not take precautions to lock or secure some of their weapons... Jared Bledsoe said he chose the Wilson handgun because it was safer than other firearms; it required the user to manipulate two safeties, instead of one, before firing. He said he didn't believe his son would be able to fire it. The gun was usually left in the nightstand, which he kept closed. He did not know whether his 2-year-old and 4-year-old sons knew it was there, but "they're not to get into dad's things anyway," he told police, according to the warrant. His wife said the boys are taught "not to touch guns." When police searched the bedroom, they found several other weapons, including another unsecured, loaded handgun in a green utility bag on the floor of the closet...
