[Excerpts] ...Thomas Hutchins, 40, had pleaded no contest to two charges of first degree reckless injury and one count of endangering safety through the use of a dangerous weapon in January. According to a criminal complaint, Hutchins and his then-girlfriend Petria Dent got into a violent argument... When she threatened to call police, Hutchins shot her in the face and then followed her as she ran to her neighbor's home. When Dent locked the front door behind her, Hutchins fired several shots. Three bullets struck a young girl in the leg and hand. "It's only pure luck that he's not facing two counts of reckless homicide," said Deputy District Attorney Patrick Kenney. Dent has undergone five surgeries since the incident, and the girl still has heavy scars. She and several of her siblings who were home at the time of the incident are still in therapy. [Excerpts] ...Milwaukee County Circuit Judge David Borowski sentenced Hutchins to 10 years in prison and five years of extended supervision on each of the injury counts to be served consecutively, and two years in prison followed by two years of extended supervision to be served concurrently on the third count. The couple soon argued; he said it was over Dent spanking the girl. Dent said he slapped her and that she defended herself by striking him with a candlestick. Hutchins denied slapping her, saying her attack was unprovoked, and he shot her out of fear for his safety. He also said she had threatened to call the police, and he feared his job would be endangered... Hutchins' attorney, Bridget Boyle, said Hutchins fired several shots at the door lock because he wanted to see if Dent was all right. Dent, who was in the courtroom gallery responded loudly: "He shot me in the face! What does she mean he wanted to see if I was OK?"... [Deputy District Attorney Patrick] Kenney noted that Dent's two children were in the home when she was shot, as were several other children in her care. There were a number of people in the second home as well. All the children are receiving therapy and are still fearful... [Full article here]
