[Excerpts] A disgraced ex-cop accused of killing his girlfriend and wounding another woman has been declared mentally unfit to stand trial, the Daily News has learned. Jerry Bowens, 43, will be transferred to a psychiatric institute instead of facing a possible life sentence for the March 8 murder of Catherine D'Onofrio and wounding of her friend Melissa Simmons, his lawyer said Tuesday. "They said he's depressed, well that's too bad," Jane D'Onofrio told The News. "He put a .357 magnum bullet in my daughter's head and now he's depressed? I'm depressed that I don't have my daughter." Bowens, had pleaded guilty and was set to testify against fellow officers in a drug scandal when he compiled a "hit list" that included D'Onofrio, Simmons, both 28, several and cops and his lawyer, prosecutors said. He later told cops he was "in a trance" at Simmons' Brooklyn apartment and meant to commit suicide, but "accidentally" killed D'Onofrio and wounded her best friend... Bowens was placed under psychiatric observation after his arrest. Justice Matthew D'Emic ruled last week that he was mentally unfit following the recommendation of a psychologist... Bowens is in isolation and cannot have visitors... [Full article here]

DIRTY EX-COP JERRY BOWENS: I 'ACCIDENTALLY' KILLED GIRLFRIEND CATHERINE DONOFRIO
Daily News

[Excerpts] A jealous dirty ex-cop claimed he was "in a trance" and on the verge of suicide when he "accidentally" killed his girlfriend and wounded her best friend, it was revealed Friday. The chilling, self-serving statement was released as Jerry Bowens was arraigned on murder and other charges in the March 8 shooting of gal pal Catherine Donofrio and Melissa Simmons. "When I lifted up the gun, it accidentally went off, striking Catherine in the head," Jerry Bowens told investigators after he was arrested... Lawyer Wayne Bodden pleaded not guilty for Bowens and requested a mental examination for his client. Bowens' previous lawyer, Edward Mandery, was taken off the case after prosecutors said he was on a death list Bowens kept. When Donofrio was killed, Mandery had been representing Bowens in a drug scandal involving four other Brooklyn narcotics cops. Bowens pleaded guilty, was kicked off the force and was set to testify against his former colleagues when he went into a jealous rage at Simmons' apartment, cops said... "I remember seeing Melissa outside screaming about someone being shot in the building, but I didn't know who she was talking about," he said. Simmons miraculously survived despite being shot in the head... [Full article here]

PSYCHO EX-COP JERRY BOWENS PUT HIS OWN ATTORNEY ON 'HIT LIST'
Daily News

[Excerpts] The lawyer for a dirty ex-cop accused of murder is off the case after his name was found on his client's hit list, sources said. Disgraced cop Jerry Bowens wasn't satisfied with the no-jail plea deal lawyer Edward Mandery got for him in an unrelated drug case, law enforcement sources said. Mandery's name was on a hit list Bowens had when he was arrested March 9 for killing his ex-girlfriend, Catherine Donofrio, 28, and wounding her friend, Melissa Simmons, on a March 8 rampage. Donofrio topped the cop's hit list, and Simmons was next, sources said. Two other exes were on Bowens' list, along with the NYPD Internal Affairs sergeant who probed drug charges against him and Mandery, who had negotiated the plea deal, police sources said. The last entry on Bowens' list: "Me"... Fellow cops said suspects always considered Bowens a rogue. They called him "Alonzo" after Denzel Washington's bad cop in the film "Training Day," said one cop. "That was his nickname long before any of this surfaced," he said. [Full article here]

FORMER COP SUSPECTED OF FATAL SHOOTING IN BROOKLYN
CBS - BROOKLYN

Mar 8, 2009 11:04 pm US/Eastern

Police are hunting for a former NYPD cop they say murdered his ex-girlfriend.

Sunday night in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a 28-year-old woman was gunned down in her friend's apartment.

She died a short time later, and a massive manhunt is already underway.

Police are searching across the tri-state for 43-year-old ex-cop Jerry Bowens, who authorities say is armed and dangerous.

Last year, Bowens was relieved of his NYPD badge after a sting operation that rooted out several allegedly corrupt officers.

There's been no sign of the former undercover narcotics officer after two 28-year-old women, described as coworkers, were found shot inside the condo on Engert Street.

A woman identified as his girlfriend was shot in the head and is dead, while the other woman remains hospitalized in stable condition with graze wounds to her arm and head.

Emilia Hallquist lives in the building next door.

"It's scary [that] he's still out there," Hallquist said. "You just don't want to know that guy is in your neighboring building."

Police fanned out in and around the Bensonhurst building of his last known address.

"We'll keep out eyes peeled, but I don't think were going to change anything we'd normally do," police officer Chris Corrado says.

The New York City Police Department is also seeking information on the following three vehicles:

1. 2009 Gray Toyota Camry with NY plate # EHN5229 (vehicle Bowens was last seen operating)

2. 2004 Black Hummer with NY plate # DJF3806

3. 2001 Gray GMC Denali with NY plate # EEE2442

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call Crime stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES), then enter TIP577.

All calls and tips are strictly confidential.

[Excerpts] A dirty ex-NYPD drug cop was on the run Sunday night after he allegedly gunned down his girlfriend and wounded her pal inside a plush Brooklyn condo. [Excerpts] ...The police said the women were friends, possibly co-workers at a law firm. The suspect, Jerry Bowens, 43, was identified by the surviving victim, the police said. Mr. Bowens was not in police custody as of late Sunday night... Annie Turchiano, who identified herself on Sunday as Ms. D’Onofrio’s godmother, said the woman worked as a legal secretary for a law firm in Manhattan and took care of her parents, both legally blind, at their home on 70th Street in Bensonhurst... “She would take in a cockroach if it needed her,” she said... Shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Ms. D’Onofrio’s father, John D’Onofrio, walked his daughter’s dog, a white mutt, up and down her street. He walked quickly, manically, up and down the block. At one point he turned and said, “There’s nothing to say and nothing to be done”... [Full article here]

[Excerpts] ...Bowens called the NYPD Sunday from a Jersey motel. When cops arrived, they found bloody rags, but no sign of the officer, a source told The Post... Donofrio's father said, "All I'm worried about is them going after the guy who did it." Annie Turchiano, Donofrio's godmother, said the victim had moved into the building to help take care of her legally blind parents and her 99-year-old grandmother. "She's a dedicated daughter, a wonderful, outgoing girl who took care of her family," Turchiano said. "Her family is in pieces, Her mother will never be the same." Neighbors said the father had been worried about his daughter. "He said that he knew that [Bowens] was a bad guy," said Raymond Nieves, who lives in the building.
