[NY] Macedon Police Chief Elmer Fish shot, killed Ida Phelps, then himself. - 1918

[Excerpts] Besides being Chief of Police of the Village, [Elmer] Fish was the representative of the Standard Oil company and prominent member of the Baptist church... he was a member of the [Palmyra branch of] Modern Woodmen of the World... The clothing was of good quality and showed evidences that they were persons of some refinement... It is presumed that Fish shot the woman [Ida Sigler Phelps] through the head and then turned his revolver on himself and fell at her side...

(I don't know how it's known that Ida chose death.)

NEWS OF MACEDON [p. 5]
The Fairport Herald, NY, Wed. 29 Jul 1918
(Transcribed on 7 Mar 2009 by Karen E. Dau of Rochester, NY)
The remains of Elmer Fish, whose body was found near Spencerport last week, were taken to Clifton Springs for burial. He leaves his wife and two young daughters; a sister, Mrs. William Stevenson of Macedon, and a brother Frank, of Palmyra. Mrs. Elmer Phelps leaves her husband and two little boys, of Macedon, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Sigler, of Canandaigua. The remains were taken to Canandaigua and the funeral was held from the chapel in Woodlawn cemetery Saturday afternoon, Rev. A. E. Allison of the Macedon Universalist church officiating.

(An account of the double death is found on page six.)

MACEDON ELOPING COUPLE FOUND DEAD [p. 6]
Disappeared from Home July 8 and Found in Spencerport Woods Sixteen Days Later

The bodies of Elmer Fish, police constable of the village of Macedon, and Mrs. Elmer Phelps were found in a little hollow in a dense part of the woodland on the farm of Myron Adams, three and one-half miles west of Spencerport, Thursday afternoon. According to report, the man and woman eloped from their homes on July 8. They had been seen in each other’s company for some time before the elopement. Both were married. Fish's wife and two girls and Mrs. Phelps' husband and two boys are still in Macedon. The couple lived in the same street, across the way from one another.

Besides being chief of police of the village, Fish was the representative of the Standard Oil company and prominent member of the Baptist church and Mrs. Phelps was a member of the Universalist church. Reports from Macedon were to the effect that the couple had left their homes on July 8. and that efforts to learn their whereabouts had not succeeded.

The body of the woman lay face upward on the ground close beside that of the man. She had been shot. One arm was folded over her breast, the other had fallen to her side with her hand almost touching that of the man, as if the couple had made an effort just before death overtook them to clasp hands. The light weight dark coat which she had been wearing and which evidently she had taken off just before the fatal shot was fired, had been thrown loosely over her shoulders. But few clues which might lead to the identification of the couple were found.

One of the most promising was a nickel badge which the man wore inside of his coat. The badge was inscribed: “Chief of Police.” The man also wore on his finger a ring which showed that he was a member of the Modern Woodmen of the World. In his pocket was a brand new notebook, and a billfold, also two $1 bills. A handkerchief was marked with the initial "E." A lavendar [sic] necktie was marked with the firm name of Lebrecht & Jones, Palmyra.

The revolver with which the shots were fired was so rusty that it was opened with difficulty. Three exploded shells were found in the magazine. It was found between the couple. Coroner Thomas A. Killip said that as near as could be ascertained there was no evidence of any shots, other than the two which caused death having taken effect.

The wound which caused the death of the man was a single shot through the temple on the left side. A similar wound and in the same locality had killed the woman. It was evident from the state of decomposition in which the bodies were at the time they were found that the couple had been dead at least ten days.

Charles Allen, who lives near the Colby Street Woods, said that about two weeks ago, he saw a strange man and woman going toward the woods. The woman was dressed in dark clothing, and so was the man. The woman carried an umbrella, and the fact that an umbrella similar to the one Mr. Allen saw the woman carrying was found near the spot where the bodies were, leads to the belief that the couple seen by Mr. Allen were the same as the couple found Thursday.

Both were of large build, the man being 5 feet 10 inches tall, and perhaps weighing in the neighborhood of 175 pounds. The woman was but little shorter, probably 5 feet 9 inches tall, and weighed possibly 150 pounds. The clothing was of good quality and showed evidences that they were persons of some refinement.

The woman wore two gold rings and a gold bracelet. She had been dressed in a dark suit, white shirtwaist, white shoes and white stockings. Pinned on the shirtwaist was a small gold watch. In a pocketbook was 14 cents in coins. There were no marks on her clothing to tell who she was, or where the clothing had been purchased.

Like the woman, the man was dressed in dark clothing of good quality. He wore small shoes with patent rubber soles.

Coroner Killip had the bodies sent to Walker's undertaking shop in Spencerport. According to what Adams, who found the bodies, told Coroner Killip, he had for the last week noticed an offensive odor on different occasions while walking through the woods near where the bodies were found. Thursday afternoon he determined to make a thorough search of the woods to learn the cause. He had not searched long when he came upon the bodies.

The spot which the couple chose to carry out their death pact in is almost in the center of a large wooded tract. The woods are dense and the undergrowth is quite heavy. The woods are about two miles from the B., L. & R. Railway. It is probable that the couple left the trolley line where it is nearest the woods and walked there. A Macedon correspondent under Friday's date wrote as follows:

Tongues were busy in the little community of Macedon yesterday when the tragic love affair which resulted in the suicide pact between Mrs. Ida Phelps, wife of Elmer Phelps, and Police Chief Elmer Fish of Macedon [sic]. The bodies of the illfated couple, which were found on Thursday in a woodland near Spencerport, were removed yesterday from the undertaking rooms in Spencerport. The remains of Mrs. Phelps were taken to Macedon, and Fish’s body was removed to Clifton Springs.

It was reported tonight that the body of Mrs. Phelps, although in an advanced state of decomposition, had been positively identified in Macedon by friends who recognized the jewelry which she wore.

Although they had been implored to sever their relationship time and again by mutual friends, the couple had been unable to do so; and they evidently reached the conclusion that death was better than life under the circumstances. So they went to Spencerport, entered the woodland on the Mylo Adams farm, and made an end of it all. It is presumed that Fish shot the woman through the head and then turned his revolver on himself and fell at her side. Their hands were almost touching when their bodies were found by Mr. Adams.

While it was generally known that there was an attachment between Chief Fish and Mrs. Phelps, the news of the double tragedy came to the village as a distinct shock. After the efforts of their friends their open meetings ceased for a time; but it was learned that they had continued to meet in secret.

It was learned today that about ten days before the couple left their homes on their last journey together, they met with an automobile accident, when the machine which Mrs. Phelps was driving and in which Fish was riding turned turtle. Neither was injured to any extent. That accident when meetings between the two were supposed to have ceased, set the village tongues to wagging again, and it is thought that it may have had a bearing on the subsequent elopement and agreement to die.

So far as can be learned, neither Mrs. Phelps nor Chief Fish left any message behind when they went away together. How long they had been gone when they died, will remain a mystery probably, as the state in which the bodies were found precludes more than a surmise as on how long they had lain in the woods. It was learned today that they left Macedon on July 8 and they were seen on that day boarding a trolley car to Rochester.

One of the two children of Mrs. Phelps is being cared for by an aunt who lives in Macedon, and the other is with its grandmother in Canandaigua. Mrs. Fish left Macedon soon after the disappearance of her husband, taking her two children with her to Clifton Springs, where she is living with her mother. Coroner Thomas A. Killip of Monroe County said tonight that it was unlikely that he should [would] conduct an inquest in the case. The funeral of Mrs. Phelps will take place tomorrow at 3 o'clock from the chapel of the Woodlawn cemetery in Canandaigua.

Chief Fish was in the neighborhood of 35 years of age, and Mrs. Phelps was about 25 years old.

...The man wore a dark suit striped with a light color and a plaid cap full at the top in the fashion of those that chauffeurs wear. In his .pocket, besides two one-dollar bills and some change, were some keys resembling those which were used in the operation of old-fashioned acetylene tanks on automobiles. The woman, who had dark hair, wore a dark skirt, with a white shirtwaist, white stockings and white rubber-soled shoes. Each wore an open-faced watch and the woman several bracelets and rings. He died by apparent suicide... “HPD is praying for the victims and families involved,” the department said in a statement... FAMILY OF DEAD POLICE OFFICER CLAIMS HPD BLOCKED MENTAL HEALTH CHECK
December 15, 2021
[EXCERPTS] The family of a Houston Police officer [Alton Holmes] who died by apparent suicide claims HPD interfered with a mental health check of their relative before his death... Holmes’ sister Kathi Schlinger said she got a call from their mother worried about suicidal comments her brother made. She said she immediately called the Harris County Sheriff’s office assigned to his criminal case. “And if he met criteria, they were going to get him the help that I was requesting”... The Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable Office confirmed that the Harris County Sheriff’s detective had initiated a call to their office and the Houston Police Department about Holmes potentially harming himself. But specially-trained deputy constables in the mental health division never made it to Holmes’ house. “Our agency was contacted and in direct communication with HPD where it was decided HPD would make contact with their officer and our office cancelled our call,” said a statement from the Montgomery County Precinct 1... Schlinger said after her brother’s death, she followed up with a sergeant at the constable’s office. “And he told me very clearly that he had a team heading to his house to assess my brother, and they got a call from someone in HPD and they told the team to stop, stand down, we’re going to take care of our own”... An HPD spokesperson said the department had no comment... Schlinger said a review of Ring doorbell footage from her brother’s home showed HPD never came to the door... Schlinger, who is a registered nurse, said pending criminal charges should have no impact on mental health services for someone in need. “We’re still human beings and if someone’s in crisis, they deserve help before they deserve to be dead,” she said. He is not only an officer, but he is a human being. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors! So I am not condoning what has happened between him and his wife. I am not saying that he is innocent, but I am also not saying he is guilty. That is for the judge to decide. Remember, there are always two sides to every story. Some people love him, people who have had dealing with him hate him. But until we know exactly what went on between the BOTH of them, no one should assume that they know. [MA] State Trooper Erickson DV - denied bail as tactical ex-Marine and "horrifically dangerous"

Married Massachusetts State Police Trooper Sgt. Bryan Erickson is accused of assaulting and trying to strangle his girlfriend as she attempted to break up with him, then fleeing Exeter police at high speeds... According to the affidavit, during the ensuing physical altercation, Erickson allegedly strangled the victim with one hand until she could not breathe, head-butted her and forcibly took her cell phone to prevent her from calling for help... The victim did respond affirmatively to the question asking if she thought Erickson might try to kill her...

EXETER POLICE: MASS. TROOPER ALLEGEDLY HEAD-BUTTED GIRLFRIEND - Feb 11. 2021

[Excerpts] ...Exeter Police Detective Patrick Mulholland said the physical altercation lasted 20-25 minutes. The victim alleged she was thrown onto her bed by Erickson when he bent her wrist back, choked her with one hand and head-butted in the forehead and the side of her head. She also alleged he prevented her from calling 911 three times, repeatedly hanging up her house phone. “(The victim) indicated the second head-butt really hurt... She was crying throughout this (altercation), but she indicated after he did that, she felt pain down the side of her face and the side of her neck.” Erickson is charged with felony domestic violence assault and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence assault, domestic violence obstructing the report of a crime, disobeying an officer, criminal trespass and reckless operation. Erickson was denied pretrial release... Mulholland was questioned by Ryan Ollis, lead assistant county attorney, about police’s LAP (Lethality Assessment Protocol) report taken from the victim after the incident. MULHOLLAND SAID THE PURPOSE OF THE FORM IS FOR POLICE TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF RISK A SUSPECT IN A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCIDENT POSES TO THE VICTIM... MULHOLLAND SAID THE VICTIM DID RESPOND AFFIRMATIVELY TO THE QUESTION ASKING IF SHE THOUGHT ERICKSON MIGHT TRY TO KILL HER, WHICH AUTOMATICALLY TRIGGERS PROTOCOLS TO HELP THE VICTIM seek protective services through Haven. Any combination of four of the final seven questions on the LAP form also triggers the protocol, Mulholland said. He testified the victim answered affirmatively to five questions asking if he has a gun or could get one easily, was choked by the suspect previously, forced intercourse when the victim did not want to engage, act violently jealous or controlling, and engage in spying or leaving threatening messages... MASS. TROOPER'S ALLEGED ATTACK OF GIRLFRIEND IN EXETER DESCRIBED IN COURT - Feb 13. 2021

[Excerpts] ...Ryan Ollis, lead assistant Rockingham County attorney, argued to deny Trooper Sgt. Bryan Erickson release, in part, because of the details of the alleged assault and a prior accusation of strangulation stemming from an incident involving the victim last fall in Topsfield, Massachusetts... “She tries to push past (him after she asks for her cell phone), all 110 pounds of her, against this sergeant of the Massachusetts State Police to get her phone, and he grabs her, twists her wrists and places her on the bed and the assault begins,” Ollis said. “The assault isn’t a continuous pinning her down; she repeatedly tries to get up, he pulls her to the ground, he pins her hands, he squeezes her jaw bone, he shoves his finger in her mouth and hooks her cheek, he puts his hand on her throat, he puts his hand over her mouth because she is screaming … and he does this repeatedly as she tries to get away”... Erickson was originally denied bail during his arraignment Feb. 3 on charges of felony domestic violence assault and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence assault, domestic violence obstructing the report of a crime, disobeying an officer, criminal trespass and reckless operation, in connection to an incident occurring at his former girlfriend’s house in Exeter Jan. 31. After the alleged assault, Exeter police allege Erickson fled the scene and sped away from local police when they attempted to pull him over... [Article here]

MASS. STATE TROOPER BRYAN ERICKSON SEEKS BAIL, AGAIN, IN EXETER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE - Feb 18. 2021

[Excerpts] ...It is alleged Erickson head-butted, choked and threw the victim onto her bed by her twisted wrist, as well as prevented the victim from calling 911 multiple times over the course of a 20- to- 25-minute struggle inside her home. It is further alleged, after fleeing the scene, Erickson fled Exeter police at high speeds on residential roads from the Great Meadow Variety store in Exeter towards Route 108, via Gary Lane, before police called off the pursuit at the Exeter-Kensington town line. In denying Erickson’s bail, [Rockingham Superior Court Judge Martin] Hornigberg wrote Erickson posed a danger to the community and the victim through his alleged attempts to “control the actions” of the victim the day prior to the altercation after she reportedly went on a date with another man. The judge also noted his alleged speeding away from pursuing Exeter police after they responded to the victim’s home after the altercation... “The lengthy text message exchange that preceded the events in question, shows a defendant who wanted to control the actions and manipulate the emotions of the alleged victim,” Honigberg wrote Tuesday. “It is clear that (Erickson) ran to his vehicle, which was parked away from the alleged victim’s home. Then drove well above the speed limit through a residential part of Exeter and south toward Massachusetts”... [Article here]

MASS. POLICE SERGEANT CHARGED WITH NH ASSAULT SUSPENDED WITHOUT PAY, EARNED $186,000 LAST YEAR - Feb 22, 2021

[Excerpts] Prosecutors in New Hampshire are fighting an appeal by a Massachusetts State Police sergeant accused of strangling his girlfriend who wants a judge to release him on bail while he awaits trial. A New Hampshire assistant county attorney filed a motion late last week opposing MSP Sgt. Bryan Erickson's bid for the judge to reconsider denying bail. "The Court agreed with the State that even supervised release would not be appropriate and that there are no conditions to otherwise mitigate the safety risks of allowing the Defendant to be released," N.H. Assistant County Attorney Ryan Ollis wrote in an objection to Erickson's motion... The Massachusetts State Police has suspended Erickson without pay. He earned $186,000 last year. The sergeant had been assigned to Troop A Northeast, which covers Andover to Revere. [Article here]

HORRIFICALLY DANGEROUS': JUDGE SLAMS MASS TROOPER'S ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO FLEE IN BAIL DENIAL - Feb. 2, 2021

BRENTWOOD — A married Massachusetts State Police trooper accused of trying to strangle his girlfriend as she attempted to break up with him, then fleeing Exeter police at high speeds Sunday, was denied bail Tuesday. Trooper Sgt. Bryan Erickson, 38, of Groveland, Massachusetts, was arraigned in Rockingham Superior Court on felony domestic violence assault and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence assault, domestic violence obstructing the report of a crime, disobeying an officer, criminal trespass and reckless operation, stemming from an alleged incident occurring at his girlfriend’s Exeter home... Judge Martin Honigberg said he was troubled by the allegation Erickson fled Exeter police... “The allegation (Erickson) fled the scene traveling 80 miles-an-hour through the streets of Exeter, which is horrifically dangerous to the public and provides the kind of evidence that really goes way over the top,” Honigberg said. “On top of the domestic violence charges, that are very, very serious… Fleeing a scene at a high rate of speed is dangerous, it’s as clear and convincing evidence he would be dangerous if he were not held (in detention).” ... Jill Cook, assistance Rockingham County attorney, argued between Erickson’s training as a state trooper and as a former Marine, he also posed an enhanced risk of danger to the victim to inflict further physical harm... “Not only does (Erickson) have years of law enforcement training, but also with the Marines”... According to the affidavit, during the ensuing physical altercation, Erickson allegedly strangled the victim with one hand until she could not breathe, head-butted her and forcibly took her cell phone to prevent her from calling for help. He also allegedly prevented her from exiting a bedroom, according to the affidavit... If you need support Haven has trained confidential advocates available.
