NEWPORT, N.H. — A former New Hampshire police chief and his wife have avoided jail time by not contesting charges that they beat her teenage son bloody last month. VA Medical Center police Sgt. Anthony Guthrie and his wife, Karin, who also worked at the center, were fined $250 and received suspended 10-day sentences for simple assault. They won’t see jail time if they stay out of trouble for a year. Police say Guthrie punched the 16-year-old and hit him in the leg with a flashlight, causing swelling, bleeding and bruising. Mrs. Guthrie hit him in the face with a belt. The medical center told the New Hampshire Union Leader Mrs. Guthrie doesn’t work there anymore. Guthrie is in — what it called — "non-duty status." Guthrie was chief Washington, N.H., from 1995 to 1999. [LINK]
