Barbara had no where to turn. He bashed her head into a cinder block in Jamaica. He also threatened to kill their children. He locked them in a room and basically held them against their will, threatening death to them if they came out. The day she was arrested for shooting him, Barbara's face revealed wounds from domestic violence. She defended herself. In her mind, Barbara had nowhere to turn.

  4. Barbara's msg is right on: get out early. Know the signs and get out while you can.

Kids should learn all this in school before they get into relationships. Not just a class - but an ongoing program for young people through middle and high school that gives them life skills.

To Barbara's daughter, again, you are as much your mother's angel now as she is yours.

    God bless your family.

Daughter of battered wife Barbara Sheehan, who killed NYPD officer husband, is glad mom shot dad
    NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

The daughter of an abusive NYPD officer shot dead by his battered wife said she's glad he's gone.

"No part of me misses him. My life is 150% better," Jennifer Sheehan said of her slain dad, Sgt. Raymond Sheehan, in an interview Thursday with Oprah Winfrey.

Jennifer Sheehan, 23, said she and her brother lived in "constant fear" her dad would harm their mom. He also went after them, once locking them in a bedroom at gunpoint, she said.

Barbara Sheehan pumped 11 bullets into her husband in their Howard Beach, Queens, home last February. She's awaiting trial on murder charges.

"I had no choice," a tearful Sheehan, 48, told Winfrey. "He was going to kill me."

Sheehan - who is free on $1 million bail - led a camera crew on a tour of the couple's upstairs bathroom, where she says her husband aimed a gun at her and threatened to kill her for refusing to join him on a trip to Florida.

She grabbed his second gun from the bedroom and raced for the stairs, opening fire when he refused to drop his gun.

"I just shot it," she said. "It all happened so fast."

Barbara Sheehan said she wanted to share her tale to warn other women to get out of abusive relationships.

She tried to leave her husband multiple times, but said he vowed to hunt her down and kill her and the kids.

Sheehan's lawyer, Michael Dowd, said he was "bewildered" that Queens prosecutors were pursuing the case in light of the history of abuse.

A spokesman for the Queens district attorney said, "This case, like all cases in Queens County, will be tried in the courtroom and not in the media."

    Accused of Killing Her Husband
    Oprah.com
    May 14, 2009
...It's highly unusual for someone awaiting trial to appear on The Oprah Show, but Barbara says she has a message she wants to get out. "It should be known that people need to get out of relationships immediately when something [violent] starts," she says. "Controlling is the first sign of someone that is an abuser. … If you can't take your children to the park without him driving by to make sure that's where you are, that's the time to get out"...

  11. The National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women

"...The National Clearinghouse works with battered women who have been arrested and are facing trial, as well as those who are serving prison sentences. Most frequently, these cases involve women who have defended themselves against life-threatening violence at the hands of their abuser, and have been charged with assault or homicide..."

  12. I am 100% behind Barbara Sheehan and her family. My father was also a cop in our town and not only beat my mother but also my self and my sister. There were many time where as a child I would hear him sayI could kill you call the police I am already here. Lucky for us he left and has become his second family's problem. My heart goes to Barbara and her loved ones!!
