[VA] Despite visible injuries on her detective husband, Police Sgt Bernadette Schraudt found not guilty of assault

A Newport News police officer was found not guilty last week of misdemeanor assault against her husband. Bernadette Schraudt, 42, was charged with assault and battery March 16... Schraudt was charged after officers responding to the couple's home for a domestic altercation call said her husband had scratches on his head, chest and arms. Schraudt's husband, also a Newport News police officer, testified at the hearing last week that there was only one scratch — and it was accidental as his wife tried to prevent him from driving away... Schraudt's employment with the police department was unclear Tuesday. She is no longer on the city's payroll, after having been recommended for termination by Police Chief James Fox, [Schraudt's attorney Robert] Lawrence said. But she is fighting that decision through a grievance procedure, "and we expect to prevail"... [Full article here]
