[Excerpts] A Sheffield Lake man was sentenced Friday to five years and seven months in prison after a jury convicted him of stalking an Elyria police detective and her family. David Schmitz, 34, had originally agreed to a plea deal in the case but later withdrew from the agreement and demanded a jury trial. The jury convicted him of retaliation, menacing by stalking, identity fraud and violating a protection order. Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Christopher Rothgery handed down the sentence immediately after the jury returned its verdict... [Excerpts] A Sheffield Lake man accused of stalking an Elyria police detective and her family took a plea deal Monday. David Schmitz, 33, entered guilty pleas to charges of violating a protection order, identity theft and menacing by stalking. An additional charge of retaliation was dropped in exchange for the plea, according to court records... ...
