[Excerpts] A juvenile and domestic relations judge certified the killing case of an Orange County sheriff’s investigator to the grand jury Monday night, listening to testimony from eight members of local and state law enforcement regarding the Dec. 11 shooting of Unionville resident Bob Canosa. Canosa’s estranged wife, Madison County resident and special education teacher Brenda Canosa, 49, faces charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Mr. Canosa, a career law enforcement professional who also worked as an investigator under former Culpeper County Sheriff Lee Hart, died Dec. 20 at the University of Virginia Medical Center from multiple gunshot wounds. He was 55... “There is evidence of an actual murder,” said Orange County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge Frank W. Somerville at the close of the 2 1/2-hour preliminary hearing Monday night, saying the court would continue to hold Mrs. Canosa without bail in the Central Virginia Regional Jail, a couple of miles from the courthouse on U.S. 15... After hearing the testimony, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Frank Somerville certified charges against Brenda Canosa and sent the case to a grand jury, which will be impaneled March 22 in Circuit Court. It will consider indicting her on charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Brenda Canosa, 49, was denied bond last week... According to testimony, at approximately 5:30 a.m. Dec. 11, she called her estranged husband from her car, which was parked outside the Unionville building where he was staying. When the 55-year-old investigator came outside, he was shot five times... Chief Deputy Tim Murphy, who owned the canine-training facility where Canosa was staying, described how he had found his friend and colleague lying on a bed in an apartment in the building, bleeding from five gunshot wounds. "He was in a great deal of pain and getting gray and weaker by the moment," Murphy said. "I talked to him, trying to keep him awake and calm." But by the time the rescue squad ambulance met the University of Virginia helicopter that landed at Unionville Elementary School, EMS personnel told Murphy to talk to Canosa quickly. "I said, 'Bob, you're dying. Who did this to you?'" Murphy testified. "He said Brenda did. He said she had called him from the driveway and told him to come outside. [Excerpts] A judge on Tuesday prohibited an Orange County Sheriff's Office deputy who is being investigated for a domestic-violence from contacting his ex-boyfriend in a hostile manner. Orange Circuit Judge Sally D.M. Kest also said Orange County sheriff's deputy Bryan Villella, 46, cannot carry a weapon during non-working hours, as part of the order. Although Villella's attorney, Tim Berry, asked Kest if his client could be allowed to carry his weapon during off-duty security assignments, she said the court "will not be making any special exceptions in this case." Angel Joel Carrion on Feb. 18 filed a petition for a domestic-violence injunction for protection. But Kest instead granted a less restrictive "no-hostile contact injunction," which means Villella can contact Carrion and show up at his house or place of business, but not act in a hostile way. Carrion said "there will be no seeing each other." If Kest had granted a domestic-violence injunction, Villella would not be allowed to carry a weapon or contact the victim by any means... [Excerpts] A judge issued a one-year “no hostile contact” injunction against an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy. Master Deputy Bryan Villella, 46, faces allegations that he abused his boyfriend of four years, even forcing his partner at gunpoint to clean up his own blood after one altercation. The court order allows Villella to continue to work while criminal inquiries and a sheriff’s office internal investigation are proceeding against him. “I came here for protection, and that’s what I got... Bryan is a cheat and a liar and he needs to be stopped... Back in May, they were calling him one of their ‘valiant officers,’” [Angel Joel] Carrion said. In November 2009, local news coverage revealed more of the 23-year veteran deputy’s problematic behavior. The sheriff’s office then started cooperating, according to Carrion. Carrion re-filed for protection on Feb. 18 this year. However, Judge Sally D.M. Kest — the same judge who presided over the March 2 hearing—denied the request pending this upcoming court appearance... The “no hostile contact” injunction allows Villella to carry his gun during duty. However, it denies Villella the right to act as off-duty security at other events, lucrative side work for many deputies... “I’m not sure what Bryan would do if he wasn’t an officer,” Carrion says. “It’s his whole identity.” The injunction does allow Carrion and Villella to still have contact, but when asked after the court hearing about that possibility, Carrion replied, “There will be no contact”... “Law enforcement has been protecting its own,” Carrion said of his previous difficulty.... A Sentinel article stated that in 2001, Villella’s ex-wife, Helen Mackenzie, made claims of domestic abuse during their five-year marriage. Los Angeles Police Department Reserve Officer Fernando Macias shot and killed his son, Brian Macias, Thursday after the teen allegedly attacked him with a picture frame, according to an LAPD statement. "During the argument, Brian grabbed a large glass framed picture off a wall and attacked Macias with the frame. As Brian advanced on Macias, he attempted to strike him with the framed picture. Macias backed up a flight of stairs and fired one round at Brian. The round struck Brian in the chest and he fell to the floor," the LAPD statement said. Sheriff's homicide investigators are handling the investigation, but officials would not confirm the statement's narrative of events. "First, there have been no prior allegations of spousal abuse made against me... Second, questions have been raised about an incident that occurred 10 years ago, prior to my marriage. [Excerpts] Former Lorain police Officer Corey Earl has been indicted on charges of forgery and passing bad checks. Lorain police Sgt. Mark Carpentiere said evidence gathered during a burglary investigation showed that a stolen check had been deposited into Earl’s Lorain National Bank checking account... A second man, Duncan Walker, 50, is accused of cashing a stolen check from the same burglary... Duncan has a criminal record, including convictions for drugs, non-support of dependants, breaking and entering, and theft. The checks, along with cash, were stolen from the offices of an apartment complex... A window in the office had been left open and a screen was cut that could have allowed someone to crawl through the window. Carpentiere said the burglary remains unsolved... Mike Duff, Earl’s attorney, said his client had been helping out a friend by depositing the check in his account for her. “Corey is not guilty and he’ll be vindicated at trial,” Duff said. “He did not know that check was stolen.” This isn’t Earl’s first encounter with the law since he left the force on disability retirement last year following a series of strokes. He is awaiting sentencing in Oberlin Municipal Court after violating his probation in a telephone harassment case involving his ex-wife, Laura Astorino. Earl, 48, had been charged with violating a protection order that Astorino filed against him in 2007, after he allegedly put a gun to his head and threatened to kill himself in their Amherst home... Earl is also the subject of a civil stalking protection order that requires him to stay away from an ex-girlfriend... Earl, who once served as president of the Lorain police union, had a troubled final few years with the department, including threatening to beat a corrections office with a baseball bat, writing a joke traffic ticket and pulling over the ex-husband of a woman he was dating. [Excerpts] Former Lorain police Officer Corey Earl was indicted yesterday for one count of forgery and a misdemeanor count of passing bad checks... Lorain County Prosecutor Dennis Will said. The check was a personal check, but Will said he didn't recall to whom the check belonged. The case was investigated by the Lorain Police Department, Will said. Earl was also in the county jail Sept. 18, a day before the alleged crime took place, after he turned himself in on an arrest warrant issued by the Oberlin Municipal Court for contempt of court. He missed his court date on a case involving a telephone harassment charge filed by his former wife... Earl was arrested in January 2009 for stalking after his ex-girlfriend told police he was stalking her and her family, texting and calling her repeatedly and tailing her home from work, according to a court document. In July 2009, he was fined $250 by Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge James Miraldi for calling the county dog warden and Lorain police for allegedly abandoning her two dogs. Earl was disciplined in early January 2008 after he admitted to making inappropriate comments to his girlfriend's ex-husband during a traffic stop, according to reports. Also in January 2008, the Amherst Law Director's office dismissed a charge Earl violated a protection order concerning his ex-wife. Amherst police were called to the woman's home for domestic disputes on July 6, 2007, and Aug. 13, 2007... [Full article here]

...[Golden Valley Police Officer Paul] Schaefer was also arrested in March of 2008 in the city of Orono.  A Seargent with that department said he was arrested for allegely assaulting his then girlfriend... pushing his girlfriend, who also lived at the home, down a flight of stairs... 

Video mentions the girlfriend that Schaefer was arrested for pushing down some stairs was herself also a police officer:

[Excerpts] A 10-year veteran of the Golden Valley Police Department is on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation into his arrest for drunken driving and obstructing legal process last week... According to a Plymouth Police report, a citizen reported a vehicle in the ditch and said he believed the driver was drunk... Schaefer was booked at Plymouth Police Department and released pending results of a urine test and charges through the Plymouth city attorney's office, the report said. [Excerpts] A Golden Valley police officer was arrested for drunk driving last week after he became uncooperative with Plymouth police officers responding to a report of a car in a ditch... Officers found the car and saw a man, later identified as Paul Edmund Schafer, walking down the road. Plymouth police said Schafer, 36, appeared to be drunk and made comments to the officers that he is a police officer himself. Schafer told the officers he should be taken home as a professional courtesy. Plymouth police said Schafer was taken into custody after he became uncooperative and combative. He was cited for fourth-degree DWI... Schafer's criminal history includes an arrest on March 2, 2008 at his home in Orono. Police were called after he was accused of pushing his girlfriend, who also lived at the home, down a flight of stairs. At the time, officers noted Schafer’s breath smelled of alcohol, but they did not conduct an official field sobriety test. [Full article here]

[Excerpts] ...When police arrived, they say off-duty Golden Valley Police Officer Paul Schaefer was out of the car and leaving the scene on foot, walking toward some area businesses. The witness pointed him out to responding officers, who then confronted him. Plymouth Police Public Information Officer Barb Cox says Schaefer would not listen to officers' orders, wouldn't take his hands out of pockets, was argumentative, tried to fight with officers and refused to go to jail. Cox also says Schaefer told the Plymouth officers that he was a Golden Valley officer and as a "professional courtesy" he should be taken home and not arrested. Cox says Plymouth police arrested him for DWI and obstructing an officer and took Schafer to jail.- DV -Cox says Plymouth City Prosecutor Elliot Knetsch is reviewing the case for possible charges.  Schaefer gave a urine sample so investigators can determine his blood alcohol content. That sample is being reviewed by the BCA and will take weeks before results are known, Knetsch said. Schaefer has been an officer with Golden Valley for ten years... Youngsville, N.C. — A Warren County sheriff's deputy was out of jail on bond Sunday after being charged with assault on a government official and resisting a public officer. Franklin County deputies said they responded early Sunday to a dispute at a house along the 1300 block of Bethlehem Church Road in Youngsville. Deputies said Christopher Michael Boncek, 34, of 231 Star Lane in Hollister, was found at the home with blood on his hands. When they tried to photograph Boncek's hands, deputies said he assaulted one of them. It was unclear why Boncek had blood on his hands, and the investigation was ongoing. Boncek was released from the Franklin County jail after posting a $5,000 bond. The Warren County sheriff said Boncek's status with the department will be addressed this week. [Full article here]
