[FL] Kissimmee Police Officer Antonio Johnson's cop-on-cop domestic gets him fired permanently

KISSIMMEE POLICE OFFICER FIRED, UNABLE TO BE REHIRED AFTER ACCUSATIONS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE - A Kissimmee police officer was just fired, and cannot be rehired, after he was accused of domestic violence against another member of the force.
July 20, 2020
[Excerpts] A Kissimmee police officer [Antonio Johnson] was just fired, and cannot be rehired, after he was accused of domestic violence against another member of the force... Oftentimes, internal affairs investigations will be put on hold until a criminal case can play out in court. In this case, Police Chief Jeff O’Dell said because the alleged domestic violence victim was also a KPD officer, there was no delay. Johnson was arrested in January following a fight with his then-5-months-pregnant girlfriend... Now, a just-completed internal affairs investigation revealed that this was just one of the claims of abuse that the victim had made against Johnson. “I was close to both of them, so it’s almost like a family member, really,” O’Dell said. “It definitely hurt my heart when I heard the details.” Johnson has pleaded not guilty on felony battery charges, but the alleged victim wrote in an injunction filing that he had broken several of her phones so that she couldn’t call 911. She also claimed that he would grab her by the face and off her feet by her jaw during arguments, noting “the pain was excruciating but never left bruises.” The woman also wrote in the injunction filing that Johnson allegedly pointed a gun toward her and pulled the trigger. “Thankfully the gun wasn’t loaded, but I thought he was going to shoot me”... The victim in the case later pulled her injunction request because the two were about to have a child. Prosecutors moved forward with the charges anyway... Johnson has exhausted all of his union appeals, and he will not be able to get his job back. KPD plans to send the internal affairs file to FDLE in order for action to be taken against his law enforcement certification... [Full article here]

MEDICAL RECORDS CONFIRM FRACTURED RIBS OF OFFICER’S WIFE CHARGED BY POLICE
Jul 15, 2020
[Excerpts] Sarah Letendre suffered fracture to “multiple ribs,” according to a copy of her discharge papers from Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Rollinsford police arrested Letendre, 34, late Friday night and charged her with domestic violence simple assault and other charges after she allegedly assaulted her husband, a Dover police officer. But Letendre and her family say the Dover police officer, who is a former mixed martial arts fighter, was the aggressor during the incident and fractured her ribs. They provided the discharge papers to Foster’s Daily Democrat as proof of their claims. Rollinsford police took her to the hospital following her arrest. The reason for the visit is listed as “psychological evaluation” but the diagnosis states: “Closed fracture of multiple ribs of left side, initial encounter.” The Dover officer has not been charged in connection with the incident. The incident has created a firestorm on social media, with more than 500 people posting #justiceforsarah on the Dover Police Department’s Facebook page. There are also at least two protests being planned in support of the 34-year-old mother of two, according to Facebook posts... In addition to being arrested and suffering fractured ribs, Letendre has at least temporarily lost primary custody of her two young children...  [Full article here]

He has abused his power as a police officer in order to have her charged with assault in that incident, and he has used his influence the get the Rollinsford NH police department (where they live) to bring a whole host of charges against her. CHARGES AGAINST DOVER OFFICER’S WIFE DISPUTED
Jul 14, 2020
[Excerpts] The Dover Police Department announced it is conducting an “internal investigation” into the conduct of one of its officers in connection with an incident at his Rollinsford home late Friday night. Rollinsford police arrested Sarah Letendre, 34, and charged her with domestic violence simple assault, obstructing report of crime and resisting arrest. Her husband is a Dover police officer... But in a Facebook post, Sarah Letendre claimed her husband, “who is a Dover police officer and former MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter, broke four of my ribs” during the incident. “I was arrested,” she added in the Facebook post... Sarah Letendre’s sister, Jess Newman, started a GoFundMe online fundraising page for her little sister, which had raised more than $8,000 for her sister’s legal defense by Tuesday evening. During an interview Tuesday, Newman described her sister as a “great mother” who’s “heartbroken because she can’t see her kids”... Asked about Sarah Letendre’s claims that her husband broke four of her ribs, Ducharme said, “All I can confirm is she went to the hospital and was evaluated”... The Dover police officer’s name is not published in this story because it is alleged he is the victim of domestic violence and he has not been charged with a crime. [Full article here]

WIFE FILES ABUSE COMPLAINT AGAINST DOVER OFFICER
Jul 16, 2020
[Excerpts] The wife of a Dover police officer claims her husband assaulted her on several occasions during the past two years, threatened her and said he would take their two young children away from her. Sarah Letendre, 34, states in a domestic violence petition that her husband, R.J. Letendre's "demeanor and threats during arguments have become increasingly aggressive." "He regularly makes verbally abusive and derogatory statements to me, including in front of our children," Sarah Letendre stated in the petition filed Tuesday in the Third Circuit Family Court in Ossipee. "He threatens to use his status as a police officer to arrest me. He threatens to kick me out of the house, saying that I don't own the home so he can have the police remove me. He threatens emergency orders against me and to take our children away. Recently those threats are more frequent." She detailed in court papers a number of times her husband allegedly assaulted her, dating back to January 2018... Sarah Letendre and her family say R.J. Letendre, who is a former mixed martial arts fighter, was the aggressor during last weekend's incident and fractured her ribs... The diagnosis states: "Closed fracture of multiple ribs of left side, initial encounter"... Sarah Letendre said an altercation started when she reached for her husband's phone after they put their kids to bed Friday night, according to court papers. Her phone was in the car. "R.J. put me in a hold and dropped me to the ground. The left side of my head was dropped into a dog bowl. I tried to get free from his hold and he knelt hard on my sternum... R.J. knelt down and then forcefully fell with his elbow into my left ribcage. I heard and felt a crack and cried out in pain. I struggled to breathe and then heard the voice of a man who must have come in through our door," Sarah Letendre said in court papers. "It was a neighbor. He said, 'Sorry man, but you are going to jail.' R.J. replied, 'No I'm not, I'm an off-duty police officer"... In her domestic violence petition, Sarah Letendre also detailed other times her husband allegedly assaulted her... [Full article here]

UPDATE:

ADVOCATE: DOVER POLICE SHOULDN’T PROBE OWN OFFICER IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE
Jul 17, 2020
[Excerpts] The public affairs director for the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence believes there should be an independent investigation into the assault allegations made against a Dover police officer by his wife. “I think there’s a really strong call, not only in this case but in cases we’ve seen throughout the state, to ensure there are autonomous and independent investigations in cases where there is any alleged misconduct by police,” Amanda Grady Sexton said Friday... Rollinsford police arrested Sarah Letendre late on Friday, July 10 and charged her with domestic violence simple assault and other charges, alleging she assaulted her husband. But she suffered multiple fractured ribs during the incident... Sarah Letendre and her family say her husband [Dover Police Officer Rober "R.J." Letendre], who is also a former mixed martial arts fighter, was the aggressor... Dover City Manager Michael Joyal issued a statement Friday in connection with the case. He said the officer involved, R.J. Letendre, “remains on paid leave at this time” and noted the police department is conducting an internal investigation into his conduct. In Joyal’s statement, he also said, “the internal investigation initiated by the police chief is being undertaken in accordance with established department policy and is consistent with law enforcement best practice as well as the police department’s own well established and nationally accredited personnel procedures.” “I have complete confidence that the chief will ensure that the internal investigation will seek to ascertain the facts from all involved”... He said he doesn’t know if the internal investigation will be released, saying that depends on what is allowed under the state’s Right to Know law... State Rep. Sherry Frost, D-Dover, agreed with Grady Sexton’s assertion there should “absolutely be an independent investigation into the case.” “Police should not be investigating themselves,” she said Friday. One of Sarah Letendre’s attorneys on Friday filed a request to reimpose a protective order against R.J. Letendre. Her attorney, Michelle Wangerin, said her client was assaulted last weekend “after enduring months of escalating violence” by R.J. Letendre. After he allegedly assaulted his wife, he then “worked with the Rollinsford Police Department to initiate and pursue criminal charges” against her, Wangerin stated in the motion. Dover District Court issued a protection order at the beginning of the week against Sarah Letendre at around the same time the Ossipee District Court issued a protection order against R.J. Letendre, according to court papers. The Ossipee Court then later rescinded its temporary protection order against R.J. Letendre because of the two conflicting orders. Wangerin’s motion asks the court to reinstate the protective order against R.J. Letendre. “A review of the underlying facts in the parties’ respective domestic violence petitions would lead a reasonable factfinder to conclude that Mr. Letendre was the predominant aggressor and that Ms. Letendre’s injuries far exceeded any injuries alleged by her husband,” Wangerin said in the motion... DOVER CITY MANAGER STATES CONFIDENCE IN POLICE CHIEF’S PROBE OF OFFICER ACCUSED OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Jul 17, 2020
Dover City Manager Michael Joyal released a statement...
"In following up on reports of a domestic violence incident past weekend occuring in the Town of Rollinsford, New Hampshire, in which an off-duty Dover police officer is alleged to be the victim of an assault by their spouse, the Dover Police Chief has directed and a separate internal investigation is ongoing to ascertain any and all facts from those involved pertaining to the officer’s conduct. The involved police officer remains on paid leave at this time... The internal investigation initiated by the Police Chief is being undertaken in accordance with established department policy and is consistent with law enforcement best practice as well as the Police Department’s own well established and nationally accredited personnel procedures. I have complete confidence that the Chief will ensure that the internal investigation will seek to ascertain the facts from all involved... Lastly, please keep in mind that due to the on-going nature of the criminal investigations being conducted by agencies independent of the Dover Police Department, there are likely many details that are unable to be released at this time. Speculation and unsubstantiated assertions freely made via social media and without a complete view of the information and facts presented by all parties is not sufficient for making an accurate, fair and just determination. Ultimately, Chief Breault and the Dover Police Department have a long standing and demonstrated zero tolerance approach to both domestic violence and employee misconduct..."

FIRED SAPD DETECTIVE FIGHTS FOR HIS JOB, NEW RECORDS REVEAL THREATENING VOICEMAILS LEFT TO MISTRESS
November 7, 2019
[Excerpts]  A San Antonio police detective who was fired in June after he sent threatening voicemails to his mistress is now fighting to get his job back... The two first began having an affair in 2006, when the woman and Emanuel — who are both married — met while waiting for dry cleaning... In 2014, Keith and the woman decided to live together. The woman left her husband, but Keith stayed with his wife, she told investigators, leading to a strain in their relationship. “Keith was the (dominant) one in the relationship and he controlled me for several years,” she told investigators. “I would have to let him know what I was doing or he would get upset, which would lead to forceful consensual sex.” Keith’s girlfriend eventually notified Keith’s wife of the affair in 2014... The revelation led Keith and the mistress to break up for about a year, but the two started seeing each other again in 2015. After another breakup in May 2018, things grew more tense between the pair. The woman told police that Keith called her about 10 times one morning that month and sent threatening text messages. “Why are you harassing me and (redacted)? This is the end for you. You’re going to die b—ch,” one of the messages read, according to the records. It was then that Keith also left two threatening voicemails. “I’m sick and tired of you,” Keith said. “I could choke the life out of you right now. Stop. This is the last warning.” Keith did not deny leaving the threatening messages, according to the records. “I was upset but I did not genuinely mean the words in the messages I left for her,” Keith wrote in a response to the allegations. “I was attempting to scare her to leave me alone. That was all”... Detectives submitted the case to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office in July 2018, but the case was rejected in April 2019. Although criminal charges weren’t filed, it was deemed that Keith’s conduct warranted the indefinite suspension... [Full article here]

[CA] Said-suicide of officer's wife, Betty Jane Stuart - 1963

POLICE OFFICER'S WIFE'S DEATH IS CALLED SUICIDE
The Sacramento Bee
23 Mar 1963, Sat, Page 6
Deputy District Attorney Donald Dorfman today said the shooting of Mrs Betty Jane Stuart, 28, the wife of North Sacramento Policeman William Stuart, was an apparent suicide.
"We have a few more witnesses to interrogate" Dorfman said "but as of now it looks like suicide."
Mrs. Stuart was shot yesterday in the abdomen while in the bedroom of the couple's home at 2537 Colfax Street North Sacramento. Dorfman said Stuart told him he had been trying to get the gun away from his wife.
He said she was kneeling in the bedroom with the gun pointed at her abdomen and every time he went close to her she cocked the pistol. "The physical aspects of the thing," Dorfman said, "point to suicide." Dorfman added an autopsy would be held today.

(I tried to find out more but couldn't.)

"He was a giant of a man, 6-feet-8-inches, just so gentle, so heartwarming, everybody that I knew loved him, especially the kids," Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Terrell Griffin commented... The judge told Mrs. Lawrence she would be held on no bond. Her primary hearing on the murder and aggravated assault charges was set for March 13. [Full article here]

Lane Judson made his daughter Crystal a promise

Lane and Patty Judson's daughter Crystal was fatally shot by the husband she was divorcing - Tacoma Washington's Police Chief David Brame. The shooting came one day after city officials publicly announced that Crystal's claims of abuse and threats would not be investigated because it was a "private matter." It was a very public murder-suicide though, executed in a shopping center parking lot with their 2 young children running to them. Chief Brame died that day but Crystal lingered. All of us here in Tacoma held our breath for that week, praying for a miracle that just could not be. She had taken a contact headshot with a police-issue glock.
Crystal DeEtte Judson

Her family stayed with her in the hospital until she died, and it was during that time Lane was given the chance to whisper to his daughter, and promise,

"Crystal, I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure this doesn't ever, ever, ever, happen to anyone again."

Lane worked tirelessly for the next 15 years, until his own death, for the single purpose of bringing about change. He believed that all law enforcement agencies across the nation must adopt a specific policy to handle officer-involved domestic violence, victims must have support and a way to safely report when they're afraid, officers who commit severe or repeated offenses must be held accountable, and law enforcement family members must be able to reach out for preventative support without it being used against them.

Accountability in an organization depends on those in charge. As a former U.S. Navy Chief,
Lane often reminded us,
"Leadership starts at the top."

Much has been accomplished - together with others - from ordinary citizens, police departments, domestic violence agencies, survivors of abuse, and local officials to U.S. Congress members. A new Washington State law was created, local law enforcement policies changed, and federal money was appropriated to address officer-involved domestic violence. Locally in Tacoma Washington, money was finally appropriated for a multi-service domestic violence agency named for Crystal.

But much is left yet to do as well. The goal is set high, and many changes must come. We need to bring the issue into the light and seek new solutions together.

"We can spread the word far and wide about the anguish Crystal suffered. We can convey the message to those who are still suffering in silence that they are not alone. And we can help prevent this tragedy from ever happening again. That would be Crystal's greatest legacy."

[MA] Detective Fanion's wife Amy died by a shot from his service weapon.

RETIRED WESTFIELD POLICE DETECTIVE BRIAN FANION, ACCUSED OF KILLING WIFE AND STAGING DEATH AS SUICIDE, MAKES 2ND BID FOR PRETRIAL RELEASE
Updated Feb 14, 2020
[Excerpts] A retired Westfield police detective accused of killing his wife and staging it as a suicide made a second bid for pretrial release Friday... [Superior Court Judge Francis] Flannery declined to release Fanion at that time... Brian Fanion, 56, was arrested on Nov. 7 and charged with his wife’s murder. Amy Fanion, 51, died on May 18, 2018, from a gunshot wound to the head. Her death was originally treated as self-inflicted, until police began to suspect her husband actually killed her with his service weapon on his lunch hour. Fanion has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The couple’s two children and many members of Amy Fanion’s immediate family - including her brother, who was at the couple’s house on the day of the shooting - stand behind Brian Fanion, said defense attorney Jeffrey Brown. "They accept that Amy Fanion killed herself"... [Full article here]

FROM NOVEMBER 2019:
BRIAN FANION’S STORY WAS INCONSISTENT, SAID PROSECUTORS
November 8, 2019
[Excerpts] Retired Westfield Police Det. Brian Fanion  is being held without bail... Investigators with the Massachusetts State Police found inconsistencies with the gathered evidence and Fanion’s statements, and began investigating her death as a homicide almost immediately... District Attorney Anthony Gulluni’s office later was granted a warrant to search Fanion’s home for evidence and “for a high definition survey scan for various digital evidence items, including computers, tablets, and cellular devices. Forensic examinations were later conducted on these items that revealed incriminating evidence.” The state medical examiner’s office found that the gun was not fired from right next to Amy’s head, but rather from a distance of about 18-inches away... An investigation into text messages and Brian Fanion’s search history revealed a pattern in which he expressed concern over divorcing his wife because of how that may affect his police pension and retirement... Brian’s search history revealed that he had been looking up the state medical examiners office, apartments for rent in the area, common poisons, and common sources of radiation just hours before the time of his wife’s death... Fanion retired from the Westfield Police Department shortly after his wife’s death, at the time citing that his own service pistol was used... [Full article here]

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THE MURDER CASE AGAINST RETIRED WESTFIELD COP BRIAN FANION, ACCUSED OF KILLING WIFE AND STAGING HER SUICIDE
Nov 08, 2019
[Excerpts] ...Amy Fanion, a mother of two, died on May 8, 2018. Brian Fanion reported to police that he had stopped at home during his lunch break on a Tuesday afternoon, that he and his wife argued, and that she shot herself in the head while he was in the bathroom, Assistant District Attorney Mary Sandstrom said during Brian Fanion’s arraignment on Thursday. Sandstrom said Fanion called 911 just after noontime, and his colleagues arrived at the couple’s home to find him crouched beside his wife, holding her hands in the dining room... In the days before Amy Fanion’s death, her husband had begun Google searching topics including household poisons, the impact of divorce on a public pension and gunshot residue. He was looking online at apartments just hours before her death, the prosecutor said... [Defense Attorney Jeffrey] Brown denies Fanion was embroiled in an affair and said Amy Fanion had historically struggled with anxiety and depression... Brown said Amy Fanion kept a journal filled with Biblical references, hinting toward peace in death just six days before she died. “On May 2, her final journal entry read: ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. ... Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls,’” Brown recited. “The passage I just read is associated with death.” [NO IT'S NOT!]... Sandstrom said Amy Fanion’s wound was not consistent with one that was self-inflicted... Fanion was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday and arrested the same day. He was held overnight and arraigned Thursday morning before many rows of family members and supporters. Brown asked for Fanion to be released on $75,000, arguing that he remained in the local community even with the investigation “hanging over his head” for the last 17 months. Brown also cited Fanion’s deep roots in the community and his volunteer efforts at local homeless charities and his church. Sandstrom argued for Fanion to be held without the right to bail pending trial. Hampden Superior Court Judge Frank Flannery ordered Fanion to be held. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9. CHD'S CANCER HOUSE OF HOPE
May 14, 2018
We are profoundly saddened by the passing of our dear friend and devoted volunteer, Amy Fanion. Personally, I will miss Wednesday mornings, talking with Amy about family, our dogs, hiking, big family vacations, and of course, how to comfort those struggling with cancer. The weekend before she passed away, Amy came to the House and trimmed back the butterfly bushes and the other plants that needed spring pruning so it would be ready for the Liberty Mutual Insurance volunteers arriving that Monday. Amy was with the House for many, many years, going back to the time when it was still in Westfield, Massachusetts. Amy was especially attached to the library at the House, kept it organized, and helped our guests find the right resources they needed to support them. Our condolences go out to Amy's family, and our hearts and prayers are with her.

SHERIFF: WIFE OF MIDSTATE OFFICER CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DEAD FROM GUNSHOT WOUND
February 4th 2020
[Excerpts] The wife of an Eatonton police officer recently arrested for domestic violence is dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says his office is still investigating this case and has not determined the death of 44-year-old Amanda Perrault to be either a homicide or a suicide. Sills says the fatal shooting took place in her bedroom... On January 28, Putnam County deputies responded to the home for a domestic violence call against Eatonton police officer Seth Michael Perrault... Perrault, 43, was then taken into custody and charged with multiple domestic violence-related counts. He was released on a $1,500 bond... Michael Perrault has not been taken into custody or charged in his wife's death... The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has conducted an autopsy on Amanda Perrault at the GBI's Crime Lab in Atlanta. The results are pending, but Sills says there was no trauma to her body other than a single gunshot wound to the head. The couple hadn't lived in Putnam County for long... WIFE OF GEORGIA POLICE OFFICER CHARGED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FOUND SHOT TO DEATH
February 4th 2020
[Excerpts] ...Amanda Perrault, 44, was found dead at her home in the 100 block of Long Island Drive in Eatonton, Georgia, Monday afternoon... The victim was shot once in the head with a .380-caliber handgun, Sills said. Her husband Michael Perrault, who was charged last week with simple battery, family violence and cruelty to children in the third degree, told police that in the midst of he and his wife arguing, she pulled out a gun and shot herself... On Jan. 31, Amanda Perrault told authorities that her husband, an Eatonton Police Department officer, hit and pushed her... Deputies on the scene reported seeing red marks on her neck and chest... Perrault previously worked in law enforcement in the Covington area... The sheriff sought the help of the GBI office in Milledgeville to get assistance from its crime scene unit.“I did that for a couple reasons,” Sills said. “One, this is a city police officer and I didn’t want anyone to think that was any inference that there was any kind of special treatment being done because he was a police officer. And very candidly, yes, it is being handled much differently because he is a police officer. It’s being scrutinized far more in that regard. And of course we have the incident of last week where he was arrested and charged with simple battery of his wife.” [Full article here]
