The ex-boyfriend of Salt Lake City police officer killed himself Wednesday in his former girlfriend's upstairs bathroom after assaulting the woman. The 35-year-old estranged boyfriend apparently broke into the woman's Salt Lake City home around 9 a.m., said Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman Jared Wihongi. The woman immediately left with her children and sought medical attention for her injuries, he said. The suspect stayed at his ex-girlfriend's home, Wihongi said. Salt Lake City police who arrived at the woman's home at 12:20 p.m. heard a single gunshot and found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Wihongi said. The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, Wihongi said. Lt. Paul Jaroscak of the Sheriff's Office said the ex-boyfriend had lived with the woman "for a period of time" and the two had children together. The man wasn't currently living with her, however, Jaroscak said. Names of the victim and suspect were not released. Jaroscak said he didn't have information on whether there is a history of domestic violence between the couple or what spurred Wednesday's assault. Information on the extent of the woman's injuries also was not available.

It was updated, but it's still shoddy writing.

    Here's my version:

The ex-boyfriend of a Salt Lake City police officer apparently killed himself Wednesday in the officer’s upstairs bathroom after assaulting her.

The 35-year-old man allegedly broke into her Salt Lake City home around 9 a.m., said Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman Jared Wihongi.

After she was allegedly assaulted, she left with her children and sought medical attention for her injuries. The ex-boyfriend did not leave the home, he said.

When Salt Lake City police arrived at the home at 12:20 p.m., officers heard a single gunshot, and then found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident, Wihongi said.

Lt. Paul Jaroscak of the Sheriff's Office said the ex-boyfriend had lived with the officer at some point and they have two children together. They were not currently living together.

Names of the officer and her ex-boyfriend were not released. Jaroscak said he didn't have information on whether there is a history of domestic violence between the couple or what spurred Wednesday's assault.

Information on the extent of the woman's injuries also was not available.

    Police identify suicide victim

Posted: 8:07 PM - A man who assaulted his ex-girlfriend and then killed himself in the upstairs bathroom of her home earlier this month has been identified as Ross Lopez Rocha of Salt Lake City.

Police say Rocha, 35, broke into the Salt Lake City home that he formerly shared with his girlfriend around 9 a.m on May 7.

He assaulted the woman and then refused to leave her home for several hours.

The woman, who is a Salt Lake City police officer, eventually persuaded the man to let her leave the house with her children, said Lt. Paul Jaroscak of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. She notified police and went to the hospital to seek treatment for her injuries, Jaroscak said.

When police arrived at the home at 12:20 p.m., they heard one gunshot and found the man dead in the bathroom from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Jaroscak said.

It's unclear whether the couple had previous domestic violence issues or exactly what led up to the assault and suicide.

The couple had lived together, but the woman had changed her locks once her boyfriend moved out, Jaroscak said. The couple shared children together who lived at the woman's home.
