[Excerpts] ...[Tulare County sheriff's deputy Jerry] Byrd, 46, who worked in the Sheriff's Department for 25 years, resigned Feb. 8, a week after his arrest. He most recently worked in the prisoner-transport division, sheriff's officials said. Superior Court Judge Darryl Ferguson indicated a possible jail sentence of a year or less, but said he would consider the sentencing recommendation from the Tulare County Probation Department. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 18. Although a no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt, it is treated as such for the purposes of sentencing. Byrd was arrested Feb. 1 at his Visalia home. His wife accused him of throwing her to the ground that morning and kicking her as many as a dozen times, a Visalia police report states. She claimed that Byrd was intoxicated and told her, "I'm going to kill you"... She claimed that her husband pushed her on their bed and punched her 15 to 20 times, according to the report. Police reported seeing bruises on the woman's back and around an ear. The victim told officers that during an argument a few days earlier, Byrd had grabbed her neck and squeezed. After being kicked Feb. 1, the report states, Byrd's wife left their home. She returned that afternoon with a female friend to pack up some items so she could move out, according to the report. That reportedly triggered another argument in which Byrd shoved the woman into his wife. Both women fled the home and called 911... Police reported finding two guns in Byrd's home: a .357-caliber revolver belonging to him and his deputy's gun, a .20-caliber Glock 22 pistol. The Glock was turned over to the Sheriff's Department after the arrest... [Full article here]
