[GA] Deputy Yancey says he killed the man who killed his officer wife Linda

[TO SEE MOST RECENT POST CLICK HERE]

I'm not going to say anything here about what I am thinking. What I think doesn't matter. I'll just let the law enforcement officers do their job, and I believe they are on this one, determined to find the answers to the questions.
Condolences to all who love the people involved. Prayers are lifted for the Yancey children, Derrick and Linda's families, for the family of the man yet to be identified, and for truth an
d justice.

Update: Linda Yancey also worked for Dekalb - as a jail and juvenile officer and there were prior domestic violence and/or disturbance calls to the Yancey home.

Published on: 06/09/08
An off-duty DeKalb County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man in his Stone Mountain home Monday after the deputy said the man shot and killed his wife, police said. The deputy was not immediately identified, but late Monday night police confirmed the identity of the deputy's wife, Linda Yancey, 44. DeKalb police spokesman Marcus Hodge would not confirm the name of her husband, but DeKalb County Tax Assessor records list Derrick A. Yancey and Linda A. Yancey as co-owners of the home where the shooting occurred... Mekka Parish, public information officer for the DeKalb police department, said the deputy [Derrick Yancey] told investigators that the man shot and killed his wife, forcing him to kill the man. "At this point, it is unclear if the man (the deputy) or the woman knew this unknown man," Parish said. "We are trying to ascertain two questions. Why was this man inside the home, and what are the details of what transpired?"... [Full article here]

..."Once our officers arrived, they did find two people deceased inside, a male and a female," said DeKalb County police spokesperson Mekka Parrish. "According to the homeowner [Derrick Yancey], an unknown man shot and killed his wife and he was then forced to shoot that unknown man inside his home." Family members could be seen trying to console each other and had very little to say. "We have no comments, none at all. We don't know what's going on at all," said one woman on the scene. Both DeKalb County police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were on the scene... [Full article here]

... "It's hard for anyone to take the life of anyone, but I guess he [Deputy Derrick Yancey] had to protect his home," said neighbor Lorraine Hunt. Parish said investigators are trying to determine whether the Yanceys knew the man. "Our prayers go out to him and his family and everybody else that's involved, and we as a community will hopefully get together and support them and give them any kind of help and support they would need," said neighbor Maurice Coley. [Excerpts] ...The victim’s sister said that Linda Yancey was a DeKalb County jailer with a 15-year-old son and a 7-year-old son. Parish said investigators are trying to determine whether anyone in the home knew the man... Neighbors said the deputy was known for his pristine yard and for patrolling the 900-home neighborhood when he was off duty. “We had retained him for performing the on-site property security for us,” said Southland Owners Association’s Doug Martin. Parish says authorities still are investigating the shooting and do not have a motive. She says they also do not know whether the man knew the Yanceys. Sheriff Thomas Brown says the deputy is on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

DeKalb deputy says he shot man who killed his wife
Couple were high school sweethearts, identity of dead man still unknown

[Excerpts] The DeKalb County sheriff's deputy who told police he was forced to shoot and kill a man inside his home Monday afternoon, after the man killed his wife, had known his wife since they were high school sweethearts... "She was in 9th grade and he was in 11th grade when they met," DeKalb Sheriff Thomas Brown said at a press conference Tuesday. Brown said the incident shook the sheriff's department, where both Yanceys worked. Derrick Yancey is a 17-year-veteran deputy whose job was to transport inmates around the state. Linda Yancey had worked for the department for 13 years, first in the county court and most recently as intake officer in the juvenile court. Police are still trying to piece together what happened inside their home Monday afternoon. "We are still unsure who the man was, how that man got into the house or why he was there," Mekka Parish, spokeswoman for the DeKalb police department, said of the unknown man. DeKalb police are handling the investigation. Police are waiting for an autopsy to help reveal the identity of the man, identified only as a Hispanic male. A relative told police that the man might have been a day laborer, but police were unable to confirm that information or any other details in further interviews, Parish said...

DEKALB COUNTY: Shooting jolts Sheriff's Office
Deputy shoots man after wife killed
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
    By April Hunt
    06/11/08
[Excerpts] The intruder in his home had just shot his wife, the woman he had loved since he was a teenager, Derrick Yancey told police. So Yancey, 46, a DeKalb County sheriff's deputy who was off-duty at the time, shot and killed the stranger, he said. His wife, 44-year-old Linda Yancey, also died inside the home that the couple shared for a decade... DeKalb County police, who are investigating the incident, did not release details... Neighbors in the quiet subdivision said Yancey would hire workers to help with landscaping and plantings at his home. But he also took personal care of the lawn, which stands out even in a neighborhood of groomed lawns and sculpted plants. "His yard is always meticulous," said Rhonda Broughton, who lives down the block. "He cut his grass every two or three days. He had to, because it's that grass they use for golf courses." Yancey and the couples' two sons, ages 8 and 18, are staying with relatives. The younger son arrived home Monday from day camp to find investigators and media swarming the area, neighbors said. Yancey is on paid administration leave. The Sheriff's Office will conduct an internal investigation to make sure Yancey followed procedures when he fired his gun.

This shooting happened in The Southland Subdivision and I am a resident there. The crime rate here is low except for some home burglaries. It's a somewhat upscale area. It does seem strange that both husband and wife are home and someone enters the home shoots the wife and is then killed by the husband. And both husband and wife are police officer's. this raises some eyebrows.

Deputy had been arrested for altercation with son

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
    06/11/08
[EXCERPTS] The DeKalb County sheriff's deputy who shot an intruder who he said shot his wife was arrested in November, 2006 for a domestic violence incident after an altercation with his teenage son, records show. Derrick Yancey, 46, was charged with simple battery and simple assault after an argument with his son over playing "offensive music," according to a police report. The teenager said Yancey hit him and threw his computer keyboard to the ground... The charges against Yancey were later dropped, according to county records. His son said he did not wish to prosecute... Both Yanceys worked for the DeKalb sheriff's office. Derrick Yancey is a 17-year-veteran deputy whose job was to transport inmates around the state. Linda Yancey had worked for the department for 13 years, first in the county court and most recently as intake officer in the juvenile court... Yancey and the couples' two sons, ages 8 and 18, are staying with relatives... Yancey is on paid administration leave. The Sheriff's Office will conduct an internal investigation to make sure Yancey followed procedures when he fired his gun.

  4. Deputy had hired man he shot as day laborer
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
    By APRIL HUNT, LARRY CONLEY
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
    Published on: 06/11/08
[Excerpts] The DeKalb County sheriff's deputy who told police he was forced to shoot an intruder who attacked his wife had brought the man into his home as a laborer, newly released records show. The shoot out - described by Derrick Yancey as the laborer shooting his wife, Linda, and Yancey shooting the laborer - erupted when the man tried to rob the couple, according to DeKalb police records. Yancey, 46, had picked up the man "to help him do some work around the house," the police says. "(He) said the male had tried to rob him and shot his wife. (He) said he then shot the male"... He called 911 after the shootings and led an officer to the basement. The officer saw an Hispanic man lifeless on the floor, "with a silver revolver lying on his left side," according to the report. Linda Yancey was lying in an adjacent doorway. The officer spotted at least one silver shell casing on the floor, as well as a "large roll of bills, including $50 and $100 dollar bills," the report said... Yancey has not been arrested or charged... Neither the sheriff's office nor county police officials would comment on Yancey's arrests in April and November 2006, in separate incidents involving his son Karron, now 18. Police reports, which include some improperly redacted information, show that, in the April incident, Yancey told police that his son hit him in the face when he tried to take away the teen's cell phone, as punishment for downloading "dirty music" on the family computer. A relative who was at the home called police, saying Linda Yancey said her husband chased their son out of the home with his pistol and threatened to "blow her son (sic) head off." Linda Yancey later confirmed the threat but said her husband was not armed when he made it. Yancey was charged with making terroristic threats. In November, Yancey and his son had another blow up over music. Yancey said he returned home to hear offensive music playing and confronted his son. The teen said Yancey hit him and threw his computer keyboard down, according to the report. Police charged Yancey with simple assault and battery. Although prosecutors dropped both cases, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council has an open investigation into Yancey on at least one of the incidents. Records from the council, a regulatory body for public safety employees, were not available Wednesday...

I am a homeowner in the Southlands and my husband and I are friendly with Officer Yancey. I just can't imagine him doing anything like this intentionally, as some might presume...You would have to know him and understand how much he has safeguarded our community from harm. He is an advocate of the law and he ensures the unruly teens in the neighborhood abides by them, additionall he goes over and beyond to provide escort services for those of us out in the evenings on the tennis courts. It is truly hard for me to ever believe that this incident was anything more than what he says it is....I know anything is possible, but if you truly knew this KIND and friendly man you would also not be so quick to assume the worst! My prayers go out to everyones families and friends affected by this tragedy.

Offficer Derrick Yancey, A/K/A Antonio, was known to have a weekend landscaping business, for which he would hire day laborers. Antonio befriended many of day laborers and they exchange cellphone numbers. If one of them has a vehicle he would have that person pick up the others and bring them to his house. Soooooo, there was no need for Antonio (Officer Yancey) to cruise Central Dr. and he doesn't usually hire just one person, it always two or more laborers. These guys do not have transportation, and almost always they do not know where they are after they have been picked and taken to a "job".

If this person planned to rob his employer, Officer "Antonio" Yancey, what was his exit strategy? Hitchhike out of the subdivision and then hop on the Marta?
