[Excerpts] Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo fired a sergeant today after the officer was accused of a domestic violence incident. Sgt. Nedith Torres also was dishonest about the incident, according to a disciplinary memo, by denying hurting the unidentified victim. The woman told investigators that the incident started after she had found photographs of him and another woman in bed. Torres’ attorney, Tom Stribling, said he plans to appeal the termination... Torres pleaded guilty to a Class C assault charge in Williamson County after he was arrested in April 2007 on a more serious charge... The victim reported being bruised on her arms and legs. AUSTIN, Texas - Sgt. Nedith Torres was fired after violating Austin Police Department rules and regulations. Torres was involved in a physical altercation with a woman in April 2007. A woman found a camera in the officer's backpack of pictures of him with another woman in states of undress. Torres asked for the camera and the woman would not return it. He grabbed her car keys, which meant she no longer had access to her cell phone, as it was in her car. The woman called the police from the street. Deputies, however, did not take action. Torres gave the keys back to the woman so she could call for a ride. Inside a house, Torres become angry again about the camera with the incriminating photos. They struggled and Torres broke the camera. The following day, the woman had injuries on her arms and legs after the altercation. She took pictures of her bruises, and took them to the police on April 30. An arrest warrant was issued on May 4... Torres plead guilty to assault, a class C misdemeanor, and was fined more than $100. [Full article here]

...Police Sergeant Nedith Torres was indefinitely suspended for assaulting a woman during a dispute over some photos in April 2007... He was charged with Class A violence assault. The charge was later reduced in court to Class C, to which Torres pled guilty. Acevedo, in a memorandum released late Tuesday afternoon, said he believed the evidence showed Torres was guilty of the Class A assault and the actions brought discredit to him [Full article here]
