[CA] On day ONE, investigators said Officer Macias killed his own son Brian in self defense.

Many LAPD officials were at the scene late Thursday...

It appears that Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators KNOW ON THE FIRST DAY why 12-year veteran Los Angeles Police Officer Fernando Macias shot and killed his own son. They JUST KNOW.

17 year old Brian Matthew Macias is dead and can't say a word, so...

THE SAME DAY that Officer Macias shot and killed his son, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau Lt. David Coleman said

"It appears to be self-defense."

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Gordon early on the NEXT DAY:

"It was self-defense."

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sheriff's Spokesman Steve Whitmore:

"It was a family and he was fearing for his life. He assaulted the man and the man was forced to defend himself"...

Brian is voiceless, but his friends aren't:

...Monrovia High School seniors Paul Gilbert and Chris Rivera said Brian Macias has been their close friend and classmate since middle school. "We've know him forever. I can't believe he's gone," Gilbert said. "He was always respectful to his father because he was a cop and Brian wanted to be a cop." Gilbert and Rivera said they question the circumstances under which the 5-foot-9-inch tall and 140-pound Macias instilled mortal fear in his father... "He wanted to go to college with us in Arizona and join the force to makes his dad happy, but he can't do that anymore," Rivera said...

[Excerpts] Sheriff's officials Monday remained tight-lipped about a domestic dispute that led a veteran LAPD reserve officer to shoot and kill his 17-year-old son inside their Monrovia area home. Los Angeles Police Department Reserve Officer Fernando Macias shot and killed his son, Brian Macias, Thursday after the teen allegedly attacked him with a picture frame, according to an LAPD statement. "During the argument, Brian grabbed a large glass framed picture off a wall and attacked Macias with the frame. As Brian advanced on Macias, he attempted to strike him with the framed picture. Macias backed up a flight of stairs and fired one round at Brian. The round struck Brian in the chest and he fell to the floor," the LAPD statement said. Sheriff's homicide investigators are handling the investigation, but officials would not confirm the statement's narrative of events. The shooting appeared to be in self-defense, sheriff's officials have said. "I won't confirm or deny that. It's part of our investigation," sheriff's homicide Lt. Dave Coleman said... "The Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division (FID) also responded and assumed responsibility for the administrative investigation," according to the LAPD statement. Coleman said he is not worried LAPD officers contaminated the crime scene. "Any access they would have had would have been under the supervision of myself or the investigators," Coleman said... Fernando Macias is a 12-year veteran of LAPD's reserve force... Fernando Macias has not been arrested or charged with a crime in the homicide... [Full article here]

[Excerpts] Monrovia High School students Friday mourned the loss of one of their own after he was shot and killed by his police officer father during an argument. Sheriff's officials said Brian Macias' father, a Los Angeles Police Department reserve officer, was acting in self-defense Thursday when he opened fire on his 17-year-old son. "Homicide investigators and prosecutors determined it to be self-defense," sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. "It was a family and he was fearing for his life. He assaulted the man and the man was forced to defend himself"... Monrovia High School seniors Paul Gilbert and Chris Rivera said Brian Macias has been their close friend and classmate since middle school. "We've know him forever. Gilbert and Rivera said they question the circumstances under which the 5-foot-9-inch tall and 140-pound Macias instilled mortal fear in his father. "It just doesn't make any sense. He was a nice kid. He didn't meant any harm to anybody," Rivera said. "His father should have handled it a different way. He didn't have to kill him." Prosecutors with the District Attorney's Office Justice System Integrity Division will oversee the sheriff's investigation... Coroner's officials would not say Friday afternoon how many times or where on the body Macias was shot because they had yet to complete their report, Assistant Coroner Ed Winter said. Rivera and Gilbert said the tragedy will have long lasting effects. "He wanted to go to college with us in Arizona and join the force to makes his dad happy, but he can't do that anymore," Rivera said... [Full article here]

...I have known Brian since he was 5 years old and my family has had the honor of sharing time with him and we know he was a good kid. Silly , funny and cheerful. And I know for a fact he loved his parents especially his father and I just really find it hard to believe he would hurt his father. He always wanted to see what else he could do to make his dad happy and proud.May God Bless you Brian and put you in peaceful place where happiness is never ending. You were loved by so many others and you will be missed. RIP...

...I have known this family for 10 years. This is a shame. Something must have gone horribly wrong for this to happen. Both the parents are supportive of their children and kind people...

...Self defense?? Really?? I know teenagers can be challenging - but shoot to kill?? Brian deserved better. RIP Brian...

It shouldnt have been hard to take him down or back away and call the real policemen. What bothers me the most is how much Brian looked up to his dad and the thought of his life being taken away by his own father is extremely depressing. My condolences go out to his sister and mother though I cant imagine what they are going through. RIP Gumble ill miss you bro...

I Knew Brian M. Macias personaly, he was the calmest(never violent), nicest guy i'v ever met. Fernando Macias his father shouldn't have reacted in such horrific way. Hes an reserve LAPD cop, couldn't he of subdued his son. A picture frame would only cause so much damage, but a FUCCCCKIN GUN. What is this woulrd coming too???????

Brian was never violent in any way. Brians father is covering up becuase he killed his son, to my belief he is forcing his wife to keep quiet about what happen which brian told me himseld his dad would minauplate and have his mother on control. His dad has no remorse for what he did everyone who ever seen or spoken to his father would tell you he will say some excuse in jusstifying in killing his son. Brian Macias we will always see you as a homie for life!

  7. I didn't know Brian, but to have a young life taken in such a manner is a violation of the grandest kind. His father, being an officer and an adult, should have had better sense than to pull a gun on his very own son. Whether it was a mistake or not, he should be prosecuted like any other person or criminal who makes the same mistake in taking a defenseless life. You should be ashamed of yourself and reap the consequences of your actions. I hope the investigators do not hold back in dealing with of their own.

    ReplyDelete
  8. i hope his father can live with the fact he killed his own son...

    ReplyDelete
  9. "Defenseless life?" Didn't he carry sharp glass toward his father and escalate the situation?

And I see a lot of his 'friends' calling him homie and stuff similar. A few even talk in gang talk above: "well u dnt know him like i do he nd i kicked it together all da damn time well its fate u live life to da fullest" That doesn't say a lot about his character...

If you weren't there, you have no idea if the boy threatened his father's life, recently got on drugs, or similarly snapped over something. No one expects deadly force against one's own child as an answer for anything, but keep in mind that the facts are not entirely known.

Teenagers can be hormonal brats and sometimes get mixed up in things that make them act out of character. I remember people from high school that were intelligent, destined to become something great, to hear a couple of years later they committed suicide or were arrested for felony criminal charges. It can happen overnight. Don't rule out anything. There was an investigation, but since it's family and private, you won't hear about what they found.

  13. Older brother of slain teen dies
    San Gabriel Valley Tribune
By Thomas Himes San Gabriel Valley Tribune, West Covina, Calif.
Publication: San Gabriel Valley Tribune (West Covina, California)
    Date: Monday, March 15 2010

Mar. 15--The older brother of a 17-year-old boy who was shot to death by his Los Angeles Police Department officer father also has died.

Paramedics found the body of Gregory Macias, 24, about 1 p.m. Saturday inside a friend's home in the 200 block of South Oak Knoll Avenue, Pasadena police Lt. Tracey Ibarra said.

While an investigation is on-going, police do not suspect foul play or suicide, Ibarra said.

Two weeks ago, Gregory's brother, Brian, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest during an argument with his father Fernando Macias, a reserve LAPD officer, while in their home in the unincorporated county area near Monrovia, according to officials.

Fernando Macias has not returned calls since the shooting.

Police said Gregory Macias went out to a Pasadena bar with his friends the night before he died.

Family members said while they're overwhelmed by the tragedies they believe their faith will help them cope with the deaths.

"His little brother wasn't at peace, I know he went to take care of him to make sure he's at peace," said Macias' uncle, Lou Monreal. "Everyone's so numb they don't even know what's going on."

Gregory Macias graduated from the UC San Diego with a pre-medical degree last spring and was preparing to serve as a medical aid worker in Africa, Monreal said.

"He's been volunteering all over before med-school," Monreal said. "He went to Guatamala and was supposed to leave for

    Africa in April."

Police are waiting for toxicology reports from the coroner. Such reports usually take four to eight weeks.

"His body obviously reacted to something," Ibarra said.

The Department of Coroner has yet to determine Macias' cause of death, coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said.

Monreal said Macias received a series of vaccinations on Thursday and Friday he believes contributed to his death.

"He went to sleep around 3:30 a.m. Friday and never woke up," Monreal said. "This is beyond what anyone can imagine. We haven't even buried Brian yet."

Brian was cremated last week and a private memorial was held for immediate family members only, Monreal said.

Sheriff's officials have said Fernando Macias killed Brian in self-defense, but the investigation is on-going.

This is making me more insane. Last week a cop, LT., shot and killed his 17 yr. old son who was, allegedly was attacking him with a 5 inch bladed hunting knife. Much more of a problen than Brian and his father. Brian was armed with a plastic picture frame, the Dollar Store type, and was shot and killed. Guess what....???? Fernado, the father walked!!!!!!!!! Yes Brian grew from 5-9...140 but that can't be that large.
I have a theory...and like it or not...that too many cops want to be superman....how do they do that? steroids Take them and get big and powerful...take them and watch your aggression, anger and combativeness level rise. I am not saying that either LT Schmitz or Officer Marcias were on steroids....but did anyone check....this world is so messed up when there is so much concern about pro athelets using 'roids and no body gives a thought about the other group of phyical pros who could be using them.....Still can't believe that Marcias walked.......I hope Shmitz isn't so lucky! And what really happened to his BIG brother?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I've been working on a post for Stephen Schmitz, and I thought of Brian right away. But you can't accuse people of murder. You can say wtf. But if you are wrong it's so harmful. And we can't guess about someone's family deaths, like the big brother. Too harmful again. It's better to spend energy trying to find or confirm the truth.

If you knew him, you'd know, and don't even try to pull "well I do know him, so there" I'm a relative, I know this man, i truely do. The truth is Brian did have drugs in his system, drugs his father bought for him, He admitted it himself he would buy drugs for Brian so he wouldn't go roaming the streets in search of them. Isn't that in itself a crime? Contributing to the deliquency of a minor? In any case, this man is a terrible human being

  23. It was obvious this was not self defence because all picture frames in their house that are big enough to "intimidate" are downstairs in the main livingroom which are opposite to the stairs leading up to the parents room which is obviously where any officer would store his gun. Meaning at some point of the dispute, fernando turned his back on brian walked up the stairs, made a left and had still had time to take his gun out of wherever he had it, return from his room "while still being attacked" and fired off one shot at brian who was supposedly still at the base of the stairs...yup sounds like self defence to me.

    1. Two years later and I'm still waiting for justice. I didn't like the story from the start and have been waiting for a conviction. I hadn't seen Brian in years, but even being an older friend I know how kind and gentle he was and how much he looked to his dad for approval. No man, regardless of position or circumstance, should bring harm to their son; their own flesh and blood. It's comforting to know he had such good friends. I wish the real story of what happened that night would surface so all his friends could find comfort knowing the truth. Peaceful wishes Brian. You are still in the thoughts, and prayers, of so many.
