[Excerpts] Current and former members of the Oakland Police Department, relatives and friends are mourning the loss of popular and respected Lt. Derrick Norfleet, who died Wednesday at his Vallejo home from what authorities said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers of all ranks wore black bands over their badges, and many broke into tears upon hearing the news. Retired officers from all over the country called the department and Norfleet's relatives to express their condolences... Chief of Police Wayne Tucker, who promoted Norfleet, said Thursday his death "is a shock to the department and the citizens of Oakland. He was valuable member of our team and will be missed. Our prayers and thoughts will be with his family"... He was a longtime member and past president of the Oakland Black Officers Association. Funeral services have been set for Oakland police Lt. Derrick Norfleet, who committed suicide Wednesday at his Vallejo home. Norfleet, 45, a popular and respected commander who joined the department in 1985, shot himself to death, authorities have said. A viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Skyview Memorial Lawn, 250 Rollingwood Drive, Vallejo. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Scottish Rite Temple, 1547 Lakeside Dr., Oakland. Burial will follow at Skyview Memorial Lawn. [Source]

ReplyDeleteI met Derrick Norfleet and Denise briefly in 1986 through and old friend named Phillip Parker while I was living in Alameda Calf. by way of Oakland Calif, they lived in San Leandro I think it's been a while for me. May Derrick rest in peace.
