[FL] Wondering if Sgt. Flynt's grandchildren really had to lose their mother, Kyishi?

There are bits that rise up to me from the murder of Kyishi Dowdell.

Today and yesterday's news report to us that Craig Flynt, son of Daytona Beach Police Spokesperson Sgt. Jimmie Flynt, killed Kyishi Dowdell - the mother of 4 of his kids. The police chief says it was an execution. Multiple shots. Some saw the final close-range shot to Kyishi's head.
Craig Flynt committed a domestic assault in 2007 that is mentioned but not defined in yesterday's news. Craig Flynt got probation.
Was it an attack?
How bad was it?
Was that his first crime?
Did the punishment fit?

Then this past May he pistol whipped Kyishi and rammed a gun in her mouth in front of one of their children - the 5 year old - assuring Kyishi that the weapon was loaded. He fled from that scene in a car that his MOTHER (Sgt. Flynt's wife? Ex?) drove back to the scene in - without Craig in the car.
Police wrote on the report that the Mother,
Sandra Flynt,

was "UNCOOPERATIVE."

What does that mean?
How uncooperative was she?

Details please.

Kyishi's grama and uncle say that Craig would have been caught but they felt that someone was hiding him.
I wonder if they said who[?].
The news doesn't say.
Kyishi had no idea? Having 4 of his children I think if Kyishi could, there would be much she would tell.

If she could she would,
but she can't.

And right before Craig "executed" Kyishi with multiple shots, she called out from the ground to a neighbor - to bring her a glass of water for her thirst.
In my mind like Jesus,
but probably just hoping it could buy her a moment more of time in which some miracle might occur.
Craig Flynt told that neighbor - Bring the Bitch some water so she will shut up - and

call my

mother.

No time was purchased.

According to Chief Chitwood, Craig's cop dad, Sgt. Jimmie "Flynt was embarrassed by his son's actions and had been working to bring Craig into police custody... We have a zero tolerance"

Zero?
Really? No sarcasm - just an honest question.

...Kyishi Dowdell and her mother were afraid "to close their eyes at night" a family member said Monday, because Dowdell's ex-boyfriend - the son of a longtime Daytona Beach police officer - was constantly peeping into the windows of their residence...

Out loud I'm wondering how much did the police know about the constant fear of Kyishi and her mother, or the frequency of Craig's stalking? What protections were afforded her family? What police response?
How hard did they try?

I'm not accusing. Just want to know.

...Chitwood said Craig did not get special treatment, in fact the Chief put out a bounty, giving two days off to any officer who caught him...

With Kyishi dead now, to me that sounds a little more like a game than a real intent to capture a man that was predictably capable of an imminent murder.

Why do I get from all of this that Kyishi & her children were not a family treasure to the Flynts?

Is it this?:

..."He [Sgt. Flynt] said, 'You know, my heart goes out to my grandkids and to the victim's family,
but you know what,
he's a big boy. He made his decision and now he has to deal with what's about to come down,'" [Chief] Chitwood said...

DAYTONA BEACH -- Kyishi Dowdell and her mother were afraid "to close their eyes at night" a family member said Monday, because Dowdell's ex-boyfriend -- the son of a longtime Daytona Beach police officer -- was constantly peeping into the windows of their residence.

Early Monday, just after 12:30, 37-year-old Craig Flynt shot Dowdell to death in a neighbor's front yard on Maley Street, a police report states.

The victim, 31, was the mother of four of Flynt's children.

As officers arrived at 820 Maley St. after two neighbors called 9-1-1, they saw Flynt shoot Dowdell once in the head, the report states. Flynt then ran onto the screened front porch of the tiny tan house, pointed the handgun at his own head, and pulled the trigger several times.

There were no more bullets left after the five-shot rampage.

Before he shot Dowdell four times, Flynt fired one round into her residence, leaving a small hole in the front door, police said. The victim's mother and the children --ages 5 to 12 -- were inside at the time.

Police arrested Flynt at the scene and charged him with first-degree murder.

The shooting death capped a tumultuous relationship between Dowdell -- described as quiet -- and Flynt.

Flynt, the son of Daytona Beach police spokesman and Investigator Jimmie Flynt has a criminal history that includes domestic violence against Dowdell.

"I heard that he told people that if he couldn't have her (Dowdell), he was going to kill her," said Paul Dowdell, an uncle of the slain woman.

Dowdell's grandmother Katherine James said she had just spoken to Dowdell on Sunday afternoon. She said Dowdell was planning a party for next Sunday.

"That girl was so sweet," James said shaking her head and placing her right hand over her eyes. "She was my baby doll."

James said Dowdell's mother, Carol James, had told her that she and the victim were afraid of Flynt. Dowdell and her children lived with Carol James next door to where she was killed.

She said, "Momma, we're scared, we can't close our eyes at night," James said, repeating what her stepdaughter had told her. "She said he had been peeping in their windows."

James and Paul Dowdell both bemoaned that a warrant for Flynt's arrest was issued two months ago, but he was still free. Flynt violated his probation for a domestic violence conviction, records show. James believes Flynt was not arrested sooner because someone was probably hiding him.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood said he offered an incentive to any officer who arrested Craig Flynt.

"In spite of our best efforts and that of his father he avoided arrest," Chitwood said via e-mail. "I had a personal bounty out for him, as of 5-25 (May 25) anyone who arrested him got 2 days off. We have a zero tolerance and do not wait for warrants from the SAO (the State Attorney's Office) for domestic assaults."

The incident that sparked the warrant occurred on May 5, a report shows. That day, Flynt struck Dowdell on the brow with a handgun, a report states.

He then shoved the gun into her mouth as he grabbed Dowdell by the hair telling her, "This time it's loaded."

Flynt released her and ran to a red Plymouth parked nearby and sped off. The episode took place in front of the pair's 5-year-old son, the report shows.

While officers were at Dowdell's house investigating the incident, Flynt's mother, Sandra Flynt, returned to the scene in the same Plymouth, the report states. Sandra Flynt said the car she was driving had just been dropped off by her son. The officer who wrote the report said Sandra Flynt was "uncooperative."

On the day of the killing, Dowdell's 18-year-old boyfriend Leroy Houston was leaving the Maley Street residence. Houston told police he heard a single gunshot and took off running. That's when Flynt shot into Dowdell's door.

Seconds later, Flynt grabbed Dowdell and dragged her across the street, the report states. Elizabeth Manning, who lives in the house where the shooting took place, told police she heard two gunshots.

"I saw her bend over and scream 'Ooooh,' " neighbor Gwen Douglas said. "Then I saw him shoot her again."

According to the police report, Manning then heard Dowdell screaming, "Ms. Elizabeth!" Manning opened her front door and saw Flynt kneeling over Dowdell in her front yard. She said the victim asked her for water.

At that point, Flynt told Manning, "Get this bitch some water so she will shut up!" the report states.

Then Flynt told Manning to go back inside and call his mother.

As Manning remained standing at her front door, she overheard Flynt say that he was going to kill Dowdell and himself, the report states.

Then Manning and several others witnessed the final shot.

When officers arrived at the scene, they too saw Flynt deliver one more bullet into Dowdell's head, the report states. Flynt then stepped onto Manning's porch and put the weapon to his head.

At his first-appearance hearing on Monday at the Volusia County Branch Jail, Flynt, a slight man, stood before the judge with a cast on his right arm. The suspect's facial expression went from blank to a grimace only when Judge Stacia Warren mentioned that he also owes $1,570 in child support.

But it's not clear who Flynt owes the money to: Dowdell or Vernell Williams, a woman he also has a 4-year-old daughter with, records show.

Flynt's father, Jimmie Flynt, did not return a message left Monday afternoon.

The report lists Dowdell's four children as witnesses to the shooting.

Victim's Children Call 911 To Report Their Mom Being Shot
    wftv.com
    POSTED: 5:55 am EDT August 4, 2008
    UPDATED: 6:21 pm EDT August 4, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The son of a prominent Daytona Beach police officer was arrested for murder. Craig Flynt is accused of shooting and killing a woman early Monday morning in the same city his father is supposed to help protect.

The shooting started inside a home on Maley Street (see map), where the woman's four children were. Then, police said, Flynt dragged his ex-girlfriend across the street to the front porch of a neighbor where police witnessed him stand over the woman and kill her.

Flynt walked into court Monday with his arm bandaged and his head down. He had been a wanted man for weeks, police said, before shooting Kyishi Dowdell while their children called for help.

"Um, somebody's trying to shoot my momma," one of her children told a 911 dispatcher.

Dispatchers received at least four other calls, including three from neighbors and one from the man who apparently had been with the victim, but took off running when shots were fired. He called police after he had drove home, unsure if the woman he was with had been hurt.

"The bottom line here is four kids lost their mother and their father last night in seconds in a senseless brutal act," said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood.

Chitwood called it an execution. His officers were closing in on Flynt and witnessed him shoot Dowdell and then attempt to shoot himself, but that time the gun didn't fire.

Investigators said Flynt and Dowdell have four kids together. The children were inside the house and heard the gunshots that claimed their mother's life. Investigators said Flynt then tried to shoot himself, but the gun didn't have any bullets remaining.

"I never would expect him to do that cause he showed love and care and he worked with his kids," said family friend Lenny Davis.

The murder came three months after Flynt was accused of pistol-whipping Dowdell and police made it a priority to find him. Flynt's father, police spokesman Jimmie Flynt, was estranged from his 37-year-old son, Chitwood said, and had tried as much as anyone to bring him in before the murder.

"He said, 'You know, my heart goes out to my grandkids and to the victim's family, but you know what, he's a big boy. He made his decision and now he has to deal with what's about to come down,'" Chitwood said.

Flynt was jailed with no bond. The police chief said, in his mind, the murder is likely a death penalty case.

A news station reported that not only is his father a police officer for Daytona Beach PD but the Chief stated that they had a warrant out for him since May of this year. If that is the case then why didn't they pick him up on that warrant before now? His own father working there didn't know his son was in the area? And they could have prevented this from happening.

  4. Slain woman faced long-term
    abuse, court records show
    Daytona Beach News-Journal, FL
    By LYDA LONGA
    August 06, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH -- Kyishi Dowdell's life with Craig Flynt was a cycle of abuse, a tumultuous relationship that ended when he chased her down and shot her to death, members of her family said Tuesday.

Family comments were backed up by court records that documented Flynt's brutality against the 31-year-old mother of his four children, often in front of them. Flynt was charged with first-degree murder Monday after pointing an empty gun to his head and pulling the trigger several times as Dowdell's bloody body lay nearby.

Just before 1 a.m. Monday, Flynt, 37, shot Dowdell at least four times as she stood in the front yard of one of Dowdell's neighbors, a police report states. The suspect delivered the final bullet into his former girlfriend's head just as four police officers arrived at the scene at Maley and Franklin streets while his 11-year-old son frantically called 9-1-1 for help.

The very mention of Flynt's name to Dowdell's relatives prompted grimaces and head shaking at the home of Dowdell's maternal grandmother.

One of Dowdell's aunts, Catherine Crosby, said Flynt had been kind to her niece at one time during the 12 years they lived together, but "that was long ago," she said bitterly.

"The abuse had been going on for quite a while," Crosby said.

Crosby said she didn't know why Dowdell, who had worked as an office manager, would not press charges against Flynt after he would pummel and threaten her, usually with a gun in his hand, records show.

In a letter dated Dec. 18, 2006, though, Dowdell signed a statement refusing to press charges of domestic violence against Flynt, saying she wanted to raise their children with him. In turn, he wrote a letter to Circuit Judge Patrick Kennedy in March 2007 calling Dowdell "a confused woman." In that same missive, he told the judge he had no interest in seeing Dowdell, only their children.

On March 14 though, six days before he sent the note to Kennedy, Flynt lurked outside Dowdell's window listening to a telephone conversation she had with another man, according to a statement she filled out in a petition for an injunction for protection filed that same day.

In that same incident, he barged into the house she shared with her children and mother in the 800 block of Maley, and pointed a gun at her head, demanding to know who she was talking to on the telephone. One of their sons was in the room and repeatedly asked his father whether he was "going to shoot Momma," records show.

Regardless of the child's presence, Flynt told Dowdell that he would kill her wherever she went -- "WalMart, Greg's Lounge, the Safari Lounge, or her house," records show.

"He said that he had already made arrangements," Dowdell wrote in the petition, referring to the threat to track her down.

Then, three months later on June 27, 2007, Flynt -- whose father is a veteran cop and the spokesman for the Daytona Beach Police Department -- was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery for luring Dowdell into his car under the ruse that he would drive her to her office in Ormond Beach.

A report states that Flynt went in the opposite direction and began striking Dowdell with a closed fist as he drove. She attempted to put her feet out the window and kick her shoes off in order to attract attention. When other motorists began staring, Flynt began kissing Dowdell so no one would suspect anything was amiss, the report states.

In December 2007, Flynt was ordered to attend mental health counseling, according to a letter written by Officer Sharon Davis of the Florida Department of Corrections. He also attended domestic violence counseling courses, records show.

But on May 5, Flynt struck Dowdell in the brow with a gun, then shoved the weapon into her mouth, court records state. The fracas took place in front of the couple's 5-year-old son.

That was the incident that prompted a warrant for Flynt's arrest; he had violated probation for his domestic violence conviction.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood told his officers and detectives that he wanted Flynt found.

But no one caught up with him until Monday morning at 820 Maley St.

No one from Flynt's family, including his father, returned requests for comment Tuesday.

Crosby said Dowdell's mother Carol James likely will not return to the house she shared with the victim and her four grandchildren on Maley. Crosby said the youngsters will live with James.

"She can't go back there," Crosby said, lowering her head. "Not after what happened."

  6. To Senator John McCain, Senator Barack Obama, Nancy Grace and others:

I am writing this letter in hope of turning more attention to the senseless and reckless acts of domestic violence that always seems to rip families completely apart. While balancing the economy, off-shore drilling, and the Iraq war are important, there a plethora of issues that need to be corrected right here at home.

On August 4th, 2008 at approximately 12:30 am, Kyishi Dowdell, 31, was slain in front of her own home on Maley Street in Daytona Beach by her ex-boyfriend and the father of her four children, Craig Flynt, 37. From the 911 tapes, the children where some of the ones making phone calls to 911from inside of house while their mother was being shot to death.

Flynt, who has an extensive criminal record, was on probation and also wanted by the Daytona Police at the time of the shooting. The shooting started on Maley Street while the four children were inside the house and ended after six shots with Flynt dragging Kyishi across the street and killing her execution style.

"The bottom line here is four kids lost their mother and their father last night in seconds in a senseless brutal act," said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood. But yet Mr. Chitwood failed to acklowledge how Flynt was able to stay so elusive from the cops for well over three months.

“According to a charging affidavit in the May 5 incident, Flynt showed up at 828 Maley St., where Dowdell lived with the children and her mother, and confronted Dowdell with a revolver as their 5-year-old son watched. The home belongs to Kyishi Dowdell's mother, Carol James. At the time, Dowdell told police that Flynt struck her with the handgun above the left eye, leaving a cut. After that, Flynt grabbed Dowdell by the hair and said 'this time it's loaded' and showed her the bullets in the gun. He then held the gun to Dowdell's head, then shoved it into her mouth, according to the report. Flynt released her and drove away.”

The Daytona Beach Police “claimed” to have made it a priority to find him. Daytona Beach has a population of 64,000 people. It is not a large city at all. Flynt's father was Jimmie Flynt, the spokesman for the Daytona Beach Police Department and an investigator with the department's internal affairs division. Chitwood said Jimmy Flynt had tried as much as anyone to bring him in before the murder. I say let’s check the phone records and see exactly whether he put his son’s well being before his duty as a police officer.

According to court documents, Flynt, 37, was sentenced to 57 days in jail in September 2007 after pleading no contest to aggravated assault and domestic battery. He was also ordered to forfeit all his firearms, undergo anger management training and receive psychological counseling. Also in 2007, he was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence and violating a protection order. And in 2000, police charged Flynt with dealing in stolen property and felony criminal conspiracy. According to court documents, the State Attorney's Office chose not prosecute that case. Records show Flynt was fighting with another woman, Vernell Williams, over child support. He has a 4-year-old daughter with Williams, records show.

Hopefully, just hopefully the laws will be changed so that no more victims of domestic violence are killed in such a tragic manner.

So we do we go from here?
    • The kids are without their father and mother.
    • Kyishi has lost her life at a very young age
    • Craig will probably be get the death penalty
    • Both families torn completely apart
    • The laws are still the same

Please, please bring some national attention to the true victims of domestic violence.

    Sincerely,

  8. The responsiblity of the pick up for the warrant for Craig Flynt's arrest should have been the top priority of the Volusia County Sheriff's Department. Looking back at the history of domestic violence connected to this case officers did not take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the slain mother of 4. An annoucement was not made to the public for Craig Flynt's arrest as others(wanted persons) are listed using public postings for capture. I believe Craig Flynt received preferential treatment, because he is the son of Sgt. Jimmie Flynt, spokesperson for DBPD. All those responsible for hiding/aiding/abetting, not limited to other law enforcement officers, Craig Flynt should be prosecuted by the full extent of the law. If it took DBPD/VCSD 12m:54s to answer a 9-1-1 call that could have been responded to in less than 2 minutes from the police headquaters, how can we as citizens of DB feel safe when calling 9-1-1 in an extreme emergency involving a live or die situation, that the DBPD and VCSD will arrive in time to save a LIFE!!!

Fund set up for children of murder victim
    By LYDA LONGA
    August 08, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH -- The family of four children whose mother was killed by their father earlier this week -- according to police -- have established a bank account for the youngsters.

Tequila Fields, a cousin of 31-year-old Kyishi Dowdell, said an account has been opened at Wachovia Bank on behalf of Dowdell's children, who range in age from 5 to 12.

Just after midnight Monday, Dowdell's ex-boyfriend Craig Flynt appeared at the house she shared with her mother, Carol James, and the children, police said.

Dowdell was saying goodbye to a friend when Flynt appeared brandishing a gun, a police report states. After firing one bullet into Dowdell's residence in the 800 block of Maley Street, Flynt dragged the young mother across the street into the front yard of a neighbor, the report states.

At that point, Flynt started shooting Dowdell, prompting other residents to call 9-1-1. When officers arrived at the scene, they saw Flynt shoot Dowdell once in the head, the report states.

In addition, Flynt's children called 9-1-1 because they saw their mother dragged outside and they heard the gunshots. What the youngsters didn't know is their father was the one attacking their mother, according to the tearful 9-1-1 call.

Flynt has been charged with first-degree murder in Dowdell's death.

Fields said many people in the community have called to render aid to the children.

"A lot of people have been calling and we would like to thank them," Fields said. "We've had so many calls that we thought opening an account would be the best way to help these kids."

The account name and number are: Carol James for the Flynt children, # 1010209291285.

Visitation for Dowdell will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mount Zion AME Baptist Church, 449 S. Martin Luther King Blvd. Her service will be Saturday at 11 a.m., also at Mount Zion.

  10. FROM 2 NEWS ARTICLES:

...Her mother, Carol James, wrote in a letter to the judge that Dowdell's death was her final act to protect the children from their father. "They bore witness to the defendant's violent outbursts, his physical assaults upon their mother and ultimately his deliberate and cowardly disregard for her and for her life itself," James wrote... "Kyishi was - and forever will be to me - a young, beautiful, vibrant, talented, friendly, courageous human being," her mother, Carol James, wrote in a letter to the judge. "She loved life, she loved God, she loved and lived her life for her children and daily showed them her love ... even in her final act to protect and shield them from the fatal assault."
